Windshield wash fluid in tubless tires

I bought a tractor that had plain water in the rear tires I am replacing the water with windshield washer fluid. What can I use for a rust inhibitor to keep the rims from rusting. they are tubeless.

You will not have any problem with washer fluid rusting the rims. It was the old calcium chloride that eat the rims up so bad.

WSWF is in fact made so that it does not cause rust etc. That is one of the reasons it has been talked about using on here a lot. That being said I still prefer to use tubes in my tires with fluid.

Washer fluid is not particularly aggressive . We let it spray all over the paint on a brand new vehicle and never give it a worry.

the reason the rims get rusty from calcium is the valve stems start seeping fluid and that rust happens pretty much instantly if not washed off. i have seen rims with calcium that had the stuff in there for years and rims are perfect shape, but also have seen completely rusted out rims from the same stuff. this is just neglect on the owners part not doing preventative maintenance. new valve stems are like 5.00 compared to a new rim.
calcium is also heavier than water or washer fluid thats why it is the choice, at least from years ago when these tractors had to earn their keep.

Back in the day CaCl flakes were cheap and readily available. Plus it was what everybody else used so nobody thought outside of the box. When CaCl went into service. Nobody had 10,20,30 years of rusted and ruined rim experience.
As for the weight difference on a typical small tractor way back then between CaCl and antifreeze. There was more difference in tractor weight if the fuel tank was empty or full. Or if one of the kids vs. the Mother-In law driving.

If the chloride is in the tire and above the top of the rim The rim will not rust unless air gets to the rim. Any place air can get to it it will rust like by leaking valve stems If you use tubes in your tires and a tube leaks The rim will rust before you know it has a leak. Our 8960 JD had fluid put in it in 1989 without tubes and it has wore out 3 sets of tires. and the rims were not rusty yet 2 years ago.

Funny thing about Windshield washer Anti Freeze....We use herbicides that are safer than it is......

Cheaper to use water and a mixture of methanol. It is basically what is in washer fluid anyway to keep it from freezing.
