Looks like my B414 deisel has been working with the battery in it in backwards for some time.My son had it and replaced battery about a year ago and probably that is when it happened. To re polarize i would change battery to pos ground and then take the feild wire off the genny and with long wire to neg post arc it to the feild ost on genny..That sound right??? Now is my battery charged up in reverse??What else must i be concerned with Harry

I doubt it's possible to successfully charge a modern battery "backwards." Leaves the factory dry-charged and if it was ever stone-dead, it probably got ruined.

What is the problem? If it's been this way for year - are you saying it was not charging for a year?

The generator doesn't care if run negative ground or positive ground. You can polarize it either way. It's the regulators that sometimes will only work one way. Some are convertible and some are not.

To polarize for positive ground - just tap the "A" terminal on the generator for a split-second with negative current.

If you ever want to stick in a modern alternator - a Hitachi from an old Subaru is an almost "bolt-in" replacement with almost no mods. Fits much better and easier then any Delco. I've got two B275s, one B414, and one 3414 and all have the little Hitachi alternators.

A friend did manage to reverse charge a 12 volt battery. He had an 8n that had been converted to 12 volts.I had heard of reverse charging.I know that nicad batteries can can reverse polarity .I had told Jay to make sure the Ford was connected negative ground because of the alternator.Tractor was out side so he took the battery into the garage and put the charger on it.When he put the battery back in the wire to the alternator smoked and melted the insulation. He asked me to look at it.The polarity was right. My meter said the battery was reverse charged.I have my doubts about the polarizing bit. When the generator closes the cutout it gets hit by the battery polarity so it gets polarized every time you start the engine.I store that idea with the coil with the INTERNAL resistor .Jays son in law took the battery to his garage and ran the battery down with a head lite.He tried to recharge the battery the right way but it wouldnt take a charge.

Yes - but most of the time (I assume) -if you take a standard FLA (flooded lead acid) battery and drain it stone dead which is to zero voltage and then try to reverse charge - the plates often get ruined inside. What is normally considered a "dead 12 volt battery" is at 11.5 volts, not 0 volts.

A HD deep-cycle battery would be more apt to sustain that kind of abuse since the plates are heavier and some are tested to 100% discharge.

After checking tracto i found the amp guage was reading backwards ..When charging it was reading to the Neg side.I then noticed the battery was installed with the pos post being ne..Changed it around to pos grnd and the amp hand just flicked to @ fro so changed it back to neg grnd and it worked fine..When i installed the guage 4 or 5 yrs ago amp guage was reading properly..My son did install a new push button ignition switch recently but i do not see that doing it..

NO To Polarize you use a small jumper wire etc to momentarily flash jump from the BAT terminal on the Voltage Regulator over to the GEN/ARM post and you should get a spark. Do that BEFORE you start the tractor or you could damage the VR.

The genny can work at EITHER polarity.

If you reverse polarity and it has an ammeter its leads need swapped or it would read bass ackwards.

If it fails to charge you might work through my Troubleshooting Procedure linked below, hope this helps
