Putting Duals on Our 4420 Combine

Had duals on our 4400 thought we would just bolt them on. Bolt pattern was different ended up having to break the original tires from the 4420 18.4 26s and turn the tube around cause the valve stem hit. Lot longer than I expected and the Mosquitoes almost ate us whole.

Where are you harvesting that you need duals on a 4420? We have been through some pretty soft ground with ours equipped with 23.1-26 tires. I would think the duals would greatly shorten the life of your final drives, and turning would require a pretty large headland. But on the other hand, I bet you can nearly walk on water with that outfit!!

I used to have a 4420 that had 23.1's. we used to call it the "Jesus" combine It would break thru ice and still keep going. 8)

RB if I remember you are below Charleston. How is your corn looking? I am between Myrtle Beach and Marion. I picked two rows today"s to check the picker. My corn is starting to mold fom too much moisture. I was hoping to pick it as I sold it but I believe I am going to have to pick all of it now.

The duals will work but your final drives will take a beating. We had some guys around here that dualed JD 4400s. They kept spare final drives on hand. Your final drives are the same.

What we found was a single 28L x 26 would go where the duals would not and the final drives held up better. The duals ball up mud between them and then you just have an roller. The 28L x 26 tires would clean out and you could keep going.

I live in Charleston, the corn is on the other side of St George. We picked 8 rows 2 weeks ago. Have not checked for mold. Hoping it will be drier next week.

Back in the 80s my Dads TR75 had duals for wet harvest.
They were a size smaller than the inside tire so on hard dry ground they hardly touched the soil. Easy on the drives when you don't need them. Added flotation when you start to sink.

I dualed a Gleaner Model F years ago-438 head. tire guy cautioned me about final drive strain. I said getting stuck strains the finals as well. Worked ok that season. 23x26 with 16.9x28dual from a D17 was an even match. Did ball up though, but got us through ok. Next year I bought out my cousins"s share of the combine, went to narrow rows and 28Lx26 singles. Yes, carried very well.

Few years ago I went to an M2, made straddle duals that go behind a 630 head, built a rear ladder over the drive tires. If I could figure out how to get into the new Photobucket, I"d put pix up again!

Our 4400 had duals when we bought it and used it for several years. Like yours it had smaller out side tires 18.4 26 in 14.9 26 out. I don't know how this will work I am afraid that it will be hard to turn. If necessary we can put the smaller tires on in just a few minutes. We only have 50 acres to harvest and the grass and weeds are not stunted by all this rain and the morning glories are doing great. We are starting to panic to get it harvested. It is miserable when all that green stuff gets wrapped up in the header. We pick enough cob corn for our selves and what we think we can sell (deer bait). The rest we will harvest with the combine to pay for the seed and fertilizer. We still have most of what is left of the 4400 both final drives. The engine we swapped last year and some misc. stuff.
