Auction 460 at the Old man Tractor repair Shop

Yesterday a friend and I took a run down non running 460 Farmall that he bought at an auction Saturday to the Old mans shop north of Eddyville Ky. When we got there the Old man came out and looked at it and asked us what were we wanting to do with it. My friend told him he bought it for $670.00 and would like to see if it would be worth saving or was it better off in the scrap yard. The Old man had us unload it and said he would try to get to it later. This morning we stopped by just to talk , and saw it running outside the shop. It had a slight miss and smokes bad. My friend ask the Old man the question Well what do you think? The Old man said it could be saved but it needed an overhaul. My friend ask what all he found. The old man started his list No water radiator and it was full of mice nest, pulled the hood and valve cover found 2 bent push rods, carb was full mud wasp battery cables were bad, starter was full of rust had to clean put used battery in, throttle was froze mice had ate and nested in the dash caused the key switch not to work and the list went on. My friend said I guess I all ready spent to much? The Old man looked at him and said Son its like this if a $ 121.00 is to much to get it going and find out the TA works good and hydraulics work no cracked block, the clutch holds, then maybe you should have not bought it. My friend asked the Old man is that all I owe you? The answer was yes. My friend said fix it!

My goodness, that is some time consuming work! It would cost that much if you did it yourself! Years ago when I did a little small engine repair, a lady picked up her mower one day and when I gave her the bill, she said, "You don't charge enough!" I know the old man is like myself, he tries to be fair to his customers, but it sounds like he doesn't charge enough either.

Just to let you know his posted rate is $ 22.50 per hour but he charges only what he feels is fair. The Old man told my friend can't charge a whole lot when working with something that you don't know if it will live or not. Everyone that has old tractors should take them to him and help keep him going. His wife is back in the hospital again!

If the old man's wife is in the hospital that will cost him several thousand dollars per day, more than that if she needs any kind surgury.

It sounds like he knows what he is doing and is very considerate of his customer's needs. That honesty is worth a lot. His posted rate of $22.50 per hour is 20-30 years out of date. Why doesn't your friend man-up and pay the old man an honest $65 or $75 per hour that his time is actually worth?

Sorry for the lecture, I don't like to hear about people being taken advantage of, even when they are not aware of it. I'm sure there are many different opinions on this subject. I believe my father and grandfather would both have shamed me for taking advantage of someone in dire need.

Yes the Old man is in his mid 60's and he worked for a Ford dealership and An IH Dealership. He tells the story The Ford Dealer closed up and so he moved to IH. Then IH went to Case IH and it just was not right so he retired and opened his own shop. When you talk with him about his wife's health bills he will tell you I just have to work a little harder, they do not have any kind of health insurance. He likes to say you know a man is only worth so much and you have to pay for the lights and people only have a little bit to spend on their farm tools so I just try to be fair and help everyone out! If you need him you might try to call him at 2709694900 he is hard hearing so you may need to talk slow. I tell all my tractor buddies about him he is a nice old man reminds me of my father.

this fellow has a name calling him the old man sounds disrespectible and if hes good enough to work on your junk even more so.

And you my good fellow, are being an AZZZ.

Amateurs! I just had a hyd. cylinder repaired at an independent repair shop. $142/hr and $152/hr for the machine shop. Had to pay for shop supplies on top of that. I'm scared to think what the Cat dealer would have charged.

My dad is the same way . Never charges what it"s worth. He enjoys doin git ,but po"s me to no end to see people taking advantage of him .
