Farming in the 21st century

Well I bought my first piece of equipment manufactured in this century! My old bar mower piled up on me so I went on a hunt for another. Couldnt really find one worth bringing home so I changed gears and started looking for a disc mower. Ended up with a nice used Kuhn 9 footer. I never knew mowing hay could be so much fun! During my search I even came across a new to me hay rake so I decided to retire the old 4 bar steel wheel IH rake. Dad bought it from a neighbor and used it 35 or so years, the neighbor used it for 10 years and who knows how many years the origenal owner (also a neighbor) had it. With a history like that I just couldnt bear to send it to scrap so I think I will make a rock garden around it along the lane.

Good idea, but I need to move the house to make a longer lane. I keep stuff about a 100' apart to keep it looking nice. Ha ha

I got tired of fighting with the sickle bar mowers too. Way too much clogging, breaking the bar, backing to reset, clearing the bar, stopping to replace broken gards or knives... Ground moles are my nemisis!

I got a DRUM mower this season. Man does that revolutionize mowing hay. Fast, no clogs, few break downs, just replace blades. A ten minute job with $10 worth of parts, hardly more than one guard on the sickle bar.

We just bought a brand new 9' Kuhn disc mower. It's amazing how much faster you can get finished with a 9' versus an 8'. Our old Fella 8' mower finally gave it up this spring. We used it for 15 years.

steel wheeled rakes are used by the old order amish. They are hard to find and the Amish are turning over every rock looking for horse useable machinery. put an add in the local paper. Likley that rake will spend the next 50 years behind a horse.

I was mowing around the barn a few weeks ago and one of our local Amish stopped, wanted to buy all of my old steel wheeled machinery. No way, he'd have put me out of the farming business in one fell swoop. Not ready to retire yet!
