Speaking of hay

I am having an infestation of foxtail in a new alfalfa field. It was planted at the end of a dry spring, then wet early summer, then dry late summer.

It was in either RR corn or RR beans for the last few years.

What would you use on it?

We also have a break out of foxtail. Getting lot of problem with Animals eyes and ears. Was told the only way to control it was burn or roundup. This year we swathed everything, but did not rake, or bale those rows. Will do those once it is dead dead.

I have no idea where this came from. The ground was weedless from years of corn and beans.

You can use Select or Arrow for the grasses. Not sure anymore how old the stand needs to be. That is 10 year old technology though. There might be different chemicals out there now that will work also.

We were short on irrigation water last summer. Lost 47 days. Then this spring the weather was cold the grass (Hay)was slow getting started, but Every weed you can think about came up. First cutting hay is all steams and weeds. Just getting ready to cut second and it looks better but still short.

I had the same problem once in the same situation. I did nothing except apply more fertilizer, (both commercial and manure). next spring the good grasses overpowered the foxtail.

I agree with Nebraska Cowman...Mow it, mow it, mow it! Don't let it head out, the alfalfa will come in after mowing faster than the foxtail.
And if cut early, it makes fine hay.

I have the same thing with a new hay field that I planted this Spring, foxtail seems to be everywhere. It had an oats cover crop, and I swathed & combined that, so hopefully the alfalfa will get some growth now that it has more light. Had to swath the oats with about a foot of stubble to reduce the amount of grass to go through the combine. I think mowing it every 30 days next year will keep the foxtail under control. Probably won't even notice it in 2 years. I planted 15 lb/acre alfalfa and drilled in timothy and orchardgrass along with the oats seed. I'll take a close cutting off in early September. I'm going to have some timothy and other grasses no-till drilled into an old alfalfa field in the Spring, so I might run some into the new field at the same time.

Your ground was weedless but not seedless. On a spring seeding a few years ago, I had turned it all over, and it seemed that within hours of seeding down there were weeds of every variety known to man in that field. The seeds are always there.
