How much to pay friend for selling my tractor?

I have an IH 1066 for sale. We live back in the sticks but have a friend who lives along a busy highway. He said I could sit the tractor there with a 4-sale sign on it. Since he is helping me sell it I would like to pay him for his efforts. What would be a fair amount? Thanks

Depends. Is he the "I want cash" kind of guy,or the kind who'd rather have you remember the favor when he needs a hand?

I helped a new neighbor when they moved in one time. Didn't expect anything in return but a good relationship. His kid came over when we were square baling straw and said he wanted to help. Didn't take long for it to come out that his dad had sent him because he thought he owed me something and wanted to square it. I didn't appreciate it. If he had come over himself, yes, but to send his kid to do it just didn't sit well with me.

So just make sure you pay this guy in the right way so you don't insult him. Maybe discuss it first BEFORE you take the tractor over. If he says you won't owe him anything,he might just mean it if you're talking cash.

Several ways to look at it, but 7% is the rate at witch you tip a waiter/watres...just my 32and 1/2 cents worth anyway. I would think he would enjoy an apple or peach pie a whole lot more, or maybe a supper for him and the misses at the local dinner/supper club.

Bet you get a few dirty looks, J. Everett, if you tip 7%. I don't remember when the standard was less than 10, and now 15 to 20% is the generally accepted amount. Cities are usually higher than rural areas, but 7% is Scrooge territory pretty much everywhere.

I don't begrudge them their tips, as they are usually minimum wage and depend on tips to "make it". My daughter in law put herself through college waiting tables, and a harder worker you never met.

How much is he going to do? Is he going to show it, demo it, collect the money, answer the phone??? Or, are you just rentng 100 square feet of grass in his yard. Don't be shy,,,ask him...what is a fair price for what you are doing...so that it is a good deal for both of us.
Tell him..I want to be good friends when this is concluded.
That is how business people make a lasting deal.

If he won't accept any money get him a gift card
that's what our daughter does when she goes on vacation to Vegas or Maine for taking care of her cats, Earth boxes gathering her papers and mail.
She's a Nurse Practitioner and is at that GS-14 level. Hal

I run a standard 10% and all I do is say if it's over this amount don't call me just sell it. So it's in there best interest to do there best to make money.

You've already heard there is no one correct answer. Depends on your friendship.

This afternoon I gave my retired machinist buddy a ride for errands in town. The traffic is more than he wants to drive in any more. We quit trading dollars a long time ago. He makes parts for me, I do whatever I can to help him out. Last thing was setting up his generator for emergency use. He doesn't know an amp from a volt.

Today he decided I was buying too much gas, or something, chauffeuring him and told me he wasn't going to use his circular sawmill again and that if I wanted to move it, I was welcome to it. Complete with two power units, hydraulic and belt.

Just clear the air. If you are friends it will be easy. I now have to decide where I'm going to set up a sawmill. And take him a couple of 4' lengths of pvc pipe tomorrow.

Anybody need an ancient 18" wood planer, originally driven by jack shaft? I do not. He knew that, and will sell it for scrap. Probably comes with the trailer it's sitting on.

You gotta get out more. 7% was in the 50's. I'm surprised they let you in the door, let alone come to your table. AS said. 15% for standard service, 20 for outstanding or extra item service.

I've done that for several people over the years, never thought of charging them.I've had them offer to pay,but I always refuse. If you feel you need to get him something I'd buy him and his wife a gift card for a nice steak dinner.

Not any more back East. They are saying now 20% standard 25% for exceptional.

That never works as they will set the price to make them a thousand and then it never sells. Don't give greed a chance to appear. Just take them out to supper. Since you apparently have a computer why do you feel the need to set it out to sell it ? Since craigslist and YT classifieds , I have never had to "sit one out" to sell it whether it be tractors, trucks or cars or you name it. Leave it home and safe and use technology to sell it.

Just depends--#1 on your relationship--#2 did it sell right away or did he have to mow around it half the summer? Just something to think about, but my general experience has been that I got favors back several times over.

It kinda depends on what all he does to sell it. If he just lets you park it in front of his place and you have to come by to demonstrate it, I'd say give him a hundred bucks and call it good. If he's showing it for you, then he deserves a percentage, say five percent.
