Propane Tank Purchase - Yes or No

The other post below about going to natural gas reminded me I have to make a decision this week about either buying a tank for approximately $900 (500 gallon) or continue "leasing" gas companies tank. Getting a price of $1.19 gallon for filling your own tank vs approx $1.35-$1.45 (depending on company) for filling their tank. I use about 1,000 gallons a year so will take about 3-4 years to pay for. Guessing I should just bite the bullet and buy my tank? Is that would most of you using propane have done?

I own my tank, and wouldn't have it any other way. The gas companies here tend to cater to you more if you own your own tank. The other thing i like about it is, it gives you flexibility if you want to switch providers.

In the last years, since 1966, all have been company owned and would not want it any other way. You own it and you are responsible for all testing and safty, company they are responsible and if tank gets outdated or develops problems then you are not responsible. And no cost for company owned tank.

When you lease your tank, you're paying for future problems, yours and all the other customers. Kind of a pay me now or pay me later deal by paying the higher price with a leased tank. I use to work for a propane company. I've owned my tank for 31 years and have never had a problem. As for as safety inspections, my usual supplier doesn't charge for it.

I would be shopping around for a new propane supplier, competition is a great thing. In my area they want you to lease their tanks.

Sounds HIGH for a tank. Around here, a 500 gallon tank is typically $500 to $600.

I also own my own 600 Gallon tank, and agree I wouldnt have it any other way cuz I can price shop allllllllll the dealers for the typical 10 to 30 cents per gallon saving. Also, you might buy one at an auction like I did and Id also price shop a new one for a better deal.........

Do they charge you an additional fee ?
I bought my own tank when they said I didn't buy enough and sent me a tank rent bill in the mail.
I bought the same I always did, fill it up when needed. I can't help we had a mild winter that year.

I'd shop around for a used tank. They run around $1.00 per gallon size when used. Once in awhile you can get 1000 gal for a better price because many don't want one that big setting around.

I price shop a couple of suppliers now. They are both running # 1.59 gal. now. Which should be .10 higher in a lease tank. But many of those companies charge WAY more for the fuel.

You can have the hassel of owning your tank, I do not want that and seems like only in the past few years you were even allowed to own your tank. Our supplier would not fill a owned tank and they are the cheapest around and no charge for leasing.

We own three. Two different houses and one at the farm shop. Bought ever one used and have never had a hassel on the inspections. We put a new coat of aluminum paint on them about ever 5 years and have replaced a regulator or two but in 25 years sure have enjoyed some good deals on off season purchases of fuel.

Owning your own tank will give you flexibility. I price shop propane every August and the prices can vary up to .40 cents per gallon. I have had my own tank for 5 years now and never had a problem with it except this darn woodpecker that keeps pecking on the lid every morning waking me up. I think he likes to hear himself.

I'm sure you also lease your car, truck, tractor and all the equipment that goes with it and pay rent for the house you live in.
Saves you a lot of money, I'm sure.

I bought two 500 gallon tanks this summer to replace the propane company tanks.Around here in ohio a 500 gallon tank will bring 500 bucks.Reconditioned tanks with new valves and paint sell for 750.

How about 1948?We have owned our own since then, right now I own 7 1000s and 2 500s and have never had any problems,if they need tested one of my 3 suppliers will test them at no charge.Plus sometimes even a coat of paint.

Was using them. Ha ha funny how everyone knew who it was just by telling how they tried to rip me off. Hard to believe they are still in business.

No I do not lease anything else. I believe it should be against the law for the car companys to be leasing them.

There is such a large split in gas prices here that
anyone leasing a tank should have their fool head
examined. Most of the time, it's less than a two
year payback. Leasing is a very lucrative business
for the supplier- it's made a lot of them rich!!!
