9600 poly,
273 has been trouble free for almost 40 yrs...knock on wood...had sisal for the first 20 then switched to poly after mice ate one string off of one loft's worth of hay

I have a 310 which I think has basically the same knotters.I use 9000 and usually have no problem with it.Had 1 mess up Thursday when it tried to tie where the twine was as thick as my little finger.Twine quality seems to be going downhill.I can usually bale 3000 or so and never miss a tie.

since I switched to plastic twine in my 346 jd baler, maybe miss a couple bales per year. It slips thru there like butter. 170 knot strength

Using 9000 sisal in my NH 268. Balers of that era were designed for sisal. Plastic may need some adjustment or even new parts. That said, we raise sheep and goats for their wool. Plastic twine gets in the wool, and is difficult to remove. Also have no want to have plastics in other machinery - spreaders, mowers, brush hogs, etc. Plays hob with bearings. At least sisal is biodegradable.

I use JD 336. Have 2 of them. 1 never misses, the other does. The twine tension at the box is the difference, and when I loosened up the bad one, it improved immediately. We raise sheep too and can't have plastic twine in the wool. Zero. Contrary to popular belief, the twine that gets into wool is the little 1" cut pieces that get on every bale during the knotting. I used plastic to bale straw once and they were everywhere in the wagon. A real no-no for wool. I use 9000 on first cutting grass / alfalfa as it is more compressible, and 7200 on later cutting bales, as they come out like bricks.

For years I fought my 273 on right side knots. Sissal 9000 because it was in it when I bought so I stuck to it. Scared that it was only meant to run that. Lose one in thirty or even one in 5 and worse. Left has never missed in 20000. Manual, manual, stare, adjust, anger, fail ever summer when it's time to bale. Rebuilt the whole plunger as well. This is a five year pattern. This year after another bad startup of knots after adjusting and tinkering all spring I put in poly 9600.

Not ONE missed bale in 1000 with poly 9600. And I can grab a gear. All I did was thread it and it screamed perfectly.

Years ago we had 268 with pretty much worn out knotters.Someone suggested 7200 New Holland twine.A bit more money but worked much better.New Holland had a reputation for really good QA on thier twine.

I have had what I thought was knotter troubles, then I discovered grooves in the ceramic guides, donuts that guide the twine, the grooves were so deep they were abrading the twine, but not cutting it in two, I just rotated the two culprits 180 degrees until I got a chance to replace them. JB
