interesting place, wonder how much one of them chunks weights? what does he use the break them apart with? Thanks for sharing!

I remember visiting the Rock Of Ages quarry in Vermont when I was a kid. Very impressive.

I"ve always admired good masonry, but can"t even do a proper job laying concrete blocks myself.

Where have you been? The guys downstairs were getting worried. Thought something may have happened with your camera. Always enjoy your pictures!

That looks like the place that was featured on an episode of this old house. In the second picture it looks like they're on top of a huge solid slab!

We;ve got quite a few dimensional stone quarries in my neck of the woods. I've know how it's done, and have seen the results of the process, but it still amazes me that they can 'cut' stone with a flame and water. Basically the flame heats the stone and the water hitting it causes it to flake off. They say it's an extreemly noisy process, but it leaves a really clean curf through the rock.

If you're ever in the area, be sure to visit North Carolina Granite in Mt. Airy, NC. http://www.ncgranite.com/
The "World"s Largest Open Face Quarry" started producing commercial product in the late 1800"s and the geologists tell them there is enough to go for many more years. Interesting information under the "Fun Facts" tab.
To me they had kind of worked off the top of the Rock when I lived in the area and were down to "ground level" in the 1980's. Some beautiful buildings and plazas created from the various granite products in Mt. Airy and other places.

We went to Barre, VT to the rock of ages quarry. Drove right in late in the day. Got up to the hole where they were drilling and blowing earlier and could look straight down. Don't know how deep it was, 100-150' maybe. There was Hope cemetary there that has the most ornate stones you could imagine. What workmanship! Went back in later years and could not get close to the hole, guard and cable across the road. It was granite but around the area were marble pits also. The marble is pretty but much softer. I like the brown granite with swirls in it.

Interesting pictures. That sure is some saw - between the blade and the water for cutting, don't think I'd like to be the operator.

It was awhile ago I saw it but I think they were making one piece counter tops. Is that what they use for slate pool tables?
