Hydraulic filter question

Dumb question... here it goes.

Its time to change the hydraulic filter on my zero turn. It calls for a Cross 1A-9023 or equiv. This is a 25 micron filter. Cross also lists a 10 micron filter 1A-9021. These are the common filter you see on log splitters.

Can anyone think of any reason it would hurt to put the 10 micron filter on instead of the spec'd 25 micron? Don't know what it would hurt, but I do like to follow the manuals when I can.

Its a Ferris 32hp/72" deck zero turn. Hydraulics also call out 15W50 Mobil 1, not hydraulic fluid. It gets changed every 250 hours.

Your thoughts?

The micron rating of the filter is the size of the particle that will pass through the filter. A 25 micron filter will allow larger particles to pass through it compared to a 10 micron filter.

Since a 10 micron filter is more restrictive than a 25 micron filter the oil flow though it may be more restricted and cause the bypass valve to open with less system flow than the 25 micron filter.

Owen,
I understand the micron ratings well. I should have asked the question the way you typed it.

Will the oil get "too dirty" during the 250 hours to plug up a 10 micron filter?? I guess I would need to cut the current filter apart and have an oil sample analyzed to know for sure.

I would hate for the last 50-100 hours before an oil change to find the relief valve is open, and I am slowly destorying two pumps and two motors if I put a 10 micron filter on. This mower runs wide open most of its life mowing long tree rows.

You can edit your posts after you have posted them in modern view.

I don't know if you could find the flow ratings of the filter based on oil viscosity on line or not. It is possible that even a 25 micron filter will not pass enough flow through it with cold oil so even on that filter the bypass may open. If you could find those specifications you could most likely figure out if the volume of oil could pass through without opening the valve.

Hydrostatic systems are very intolerant of dirty oil.

I would use the filter recommended by the manufacturer and change it and the oil twice as often as recommended.

Your machine was carefully engineered and experienced engineers determined the proper filter to protect the transmission. Don't gamble, void your warranty and cause yourself a lot of grief.
