Ford 850 tractor carburetor float stick I think.

My Ford 850 tractor carburetor float stick I think. While running the tractor, sometimes it will sputter and then die like it has no gas. I checked the fuel line from tank to the carburetor and they are fine. Glass bowl is full of fuel also. An old friend of mine who worked on these tractors said tap on the side of the carburetor then I can restart the tractor and it runs. This works, but I am tired of holding a hammer to keep the tractor running
Do I need to get a rebuild kit for the carburetor and if so where do I get one?
Thanks for the help.

Float needle is what sounds like it is sticking due to varnish in the carb. If you have an O'Reilly's auto parts store they sell a good kit with good instructions for around $20. You will need to have the carb number which is on the back side of the carb on a brass tag

I have also heard of a farmer that hung the hammer with a wire so that it regularly tapped the side of the carburetor. But a Kit would probably work better.:)

You probably have a viton tip needle valve. These have be hawked for years as leak proof.NOT SO.I have opened carberators that had the needle stuck shut.Small engines have a soft seat that sticks to a steel needle. If the carb bowls full of gas the needle valve Is NOT stuck shut.Flooding can stall an engine.Rapping carberators with a hammer sometimes fixes flooding carbs but it breaks a few too.

So what causes flooding a stuck float. Do I need to get a kit
and rebuild the carberator?
