Possible that you could sow 2 fingers in a split second together with a piece of grass!
Well it happened to me today out in the field when i was unplugging my baler .
I grabbed a bit of hay with the pliers and jerked it lose,INSTANT PAIN.WTF!
I looked at my hand and saw a thin blade of hard grass had gone straight trough the fleshy part of the second joint of my pinky finger and on all the way trough the same joint on my ring finger effectively sowing the 2 fingers together. I have no glue how it could happen but it did.
i had to cut the blade between the fingers and use the pliers to jerk those mean pieces out.MORE PAIN, but at least i could go on and finish the unplugging and continue baling.

I'm almost scared of my hay now,... it bites back!

Never tried to sew with grass, at least, not dumb
enuf to try more than one finger at a time. But,
to your credit, new medical discoveries are being
made all of the time. I built a hook from an old
piece of 1/2" rod, about 3' long by bending about
four inches of each end a bit over 90 degrees and
welding an old mower section onto one end. I
carry it on the tractor I bale with or in the
twine box for such occasions. It's saved many
tangles with thistles and other needle like things
sometimes in hay, and can be used somewhat like a
rake to unplug those tough spots a whole lot
easier...

I always use a long hook to pull hay from the pick up, I learned that lesson many years ago:wink:
But it was not the pick up that was plugged, I was trying to pull a plug of hay that was jamming a belt.

I hate wearing gloves, I got no feel with those things on, to me they are like using a 2' long monkey wrench to loosen a 1/4" nut in a tight place.

Hay grazer or sudan grass will do it, maybe worse. Had to take a friend to the emergency room for stitches unplugging a round baler. I had told him a few minutes before to be careful.

I found some kind of four tine garden rake with a four foot handle at Ace Hardware that works good for unplugging the pickup.

I was cutting some canary grass Saturday and plugged the haybine, pulling and cutting with a jack knife being careful not to cut my self with the knife. Soon red running down my arm, hand all sliced up from the canary, never had that happen before, leather gloves on the dash in the tractor. The old saying--live and learn!!

I agree. I don"t like wearing gloves either because you lose so much of the ability to feel.

I have found some gloves at TSC that allowed good sense of touch, but they"re pricey (at least in my book). Run $10.00+.

I'll have to make something like that, even 2 feet would be a big help. At least I don't have any reeds canary grass at the moment.

Gene:

Better yet, get Kevlar gloves. You can slice it &
dice it in the palm of your hand with a razor knife,
as long as you are wearing Kevlar gloves, and have
no effect on the glove by the knife. Kevlar is 5
times stronger than steel.
