Ford 300 6 cyl flooding

About 2 years ago, I ordered a rebuilt Carter YFA carburetor from National Carburetor in Florida for my 1980 F-100. About the time the warranty ran out, it started flooding in a major way, but only every few weeks. At this time I had put less than 15000 miles on the carburetor. In the past I have been able to tap on it to jar the float and/or needle valve loose and go. I have had it apart a couple of times and cleaned it, set the float to factory specs, replaced the needle valve and seat, etc... but it keeps doing the same thing. Has anyone else run into this? I would buy and aftermarket replacement if I could find one. We had some awful Carter carburetors on Dodges when I was a child, and apparently this one is no better.

What is the material used in your float? I had a Ford Pinto and it did that. The local Ford dealer told me the floats were made from a composite and would become gasoline soaked and then sink causing a flooded engine. I replaced the float and it fixed the problem.

If it's a metal float, shake the float near your ear and see if its full of gas. Hal

it is composite and I thought the same thing but the problem is intermittent. I would think if it was gasoline soaked it would do it all the time.

When we had the Pinto it would always start ok in the morning, but if you stopped for a cup of coffee or a pack of smokes you would have a flooded engine. Hal

I had a 1983 F250 with 300 and it did the same thing. The accelerator pump diaphragm gets stiff from alcohol in the gas. This causes the accelerator pump to vibrate at idle and pump in gas. Installing a new accelerator pump diaphragm will temporally solve this. I permanently cured the 1983 by adapting a ford two barrel.

is it much trouble to adapt the 2 bbl? I've been thinking of going that route. I have worked on lots of Ford 2bbls and had very good service out of them. I may have one around here somewhere that I could go through. In this case, if I go to a 2 bbl I might buy a new Holley since I depend on this truck a lot.

had same problem this spring 1977 F150 with 300 6cy, put in rebuilt from Advance auto, worked great for 2 weeks, back to flooding, they replaced it, I leaned choke out a good bit and no problems , runs great, gotta pump it a lot to start tho :)

Had bad carburator flooding problems at start-up with a '75 Dodge D200 pickup with a 318 2V carb. The dealer and another local garage could never get it to start easily cold. The best thing I did with was to change the automatic choke to a manual choke. That truck started and drove much better after that. A later '84 pickup with the same engine did not have those same problems.

FRANKINFLORIDA has it ALMOST figured out, "cept he"s a little over dramatic with his "vibrating at idle" theory.

Actually, one side of the accelerator pump diaphragm in the YFA is exposed to manifold vacuum, and, in addition to being the accelerator pump, it operates the metering rod, in effect the power valve.

The diaphragm gets to leaking, providing a path from the bottom of the float bowl to the intake manifold, which, needless to say causes wasted gasoline, rough idle, and flooding.

This is a known COMMON problem for as long as the YFA has been on the market.

For this illustration, the gasoline is GREEN, and it IS staying on the float bowl side of the diaphragm!

Here's what the silly little critter looks like:

Had the same problem with a 77 chevy with a plastic float. It flooded now and then. When stopped for a red light you could see black smoke from the tail pipe in the side mirror.Didnt have a scale to weigh the float so just compared it to a new one.Found the vacuum advance wasnt working.Bought the truck from a fellow who complained it got poor gas milage.Cut into the old float and found it had absorbed gas.

I bought an adapter from an auto parts store.
this adapter was for a Holley carb. and needed a
home made plate between the adapter and the Ford
two barrel. Accelerator cable worked ok
transmission kick down not so much.

Bob that is a most excellent illustration. The vibration theory was not mind but the service manager at the local ford dealer. My truck actually flooded the worst when completely warmed up and stopped at long traffic light.

HEY! This is a GREAT site to share our thoughts and observations!

Great FUN!!

In past decades, I had a problem with my Ford 302, when it was shut down for a short period it was very hard to start and when it did, blew black smoke. The problem was the float valve leaked a little and the fuel pump pressure could over fill the carb, gas then leaked down into the intake. Parked over night the excess fuel might became dispersed and was not always a problem, nor was a short term stop, but medium term was trouble.
