My owners manual is calling for a 20 weight oil to be used in the engine crankcase for temps between 30 and 90. What would be a suitable replacement?

What make of engine are you talking about ? Most engines use 20 weight oil at temps 32 and down and above 32 they use 30 weight in a straight oil.

The new stuff has very tight tolerances, gotta use a thin oil, not enough room for the thicker oil.

Or so I'm told.

Maybe it is a Maytag washing machine engine pulling a homemade snow thrower??
A little bit of info included within a question will just work wonders.

For years now, I have only been buying John Deere oil, even though it is a bit more costly. The JD +50 oil is a multi viscosity 15-40 oil and is suitable for all temperature ranges. Plus, even though it is more expensive, the maintenance interval is extended. I've been using it in my pickup, which has an oil life monitor, and it has been going 12-15,000 miles between changes. So, I kind of figure that even though it costs more, it pays for itself by only having to change it half as often....

Ah but fill in the blank. What is it your putting oil in. Hard for use to give you a correct/good answer with out know what you have. Sort of like on my 1935 JD-B it calls for 50 or 60W oil if temps are over 90 out. So what are you changing oil in????????/

Seems like modern 15-40 multi-vis works in just about everything now, and would work year around. Although I think straight 20 wt. is still available, but you may have to look a little for it.

Use 15/40.Period.Back in the day, there was no such thing as multi-vis oils.Hence the different wt oil recomendations for different temps. The 'new' multi-vis oils are now lots better than the old oils of 'the day'.

Mike I am like you and for years ran 15/40 in everything but now days these late model engines more and more specing things like 5w /20 . New small fast with close fitting parts just do not handle the heavier oil. Just had a neighbor small yanmar diesel engine. Had been running it couple hours and stopped went in the house for a drink, cam back and fired his mower. Engine failed and THEIR contention is the hot/heavier oil pumped to the top of the engine and did not return fast enough. Starved the engine to point of failure.

Quick change oil place put 10W-30 in my sister's brand new Ford.
It called for 5W-20. Engine rattled and clattered to beat the band.
They refused to change it, said that little difference didn't matter.
I changed it to the correct weight oil and it quieted right down.
We took it back, let them hear it again with the right oil and let them
know they'd just lost the business of everyone we could talk to.

Maybe he's got a straight 8 Pontiac, they needed 20 weight 'cause of the way they had the piston rings fitted and tighter clearances in the cylinder.
