My brother has a chance to buy apair of JD 71 2 row corn planters. One is in really nice shape the other one is all there, but the fertilizer hoppers and seed boxes are pretty rotten. What would you guys think was a fair price for the pair?

Maybe I was unclear there are two machines, one would be parts, and the other is complete, ready to go to work. They are both two row machines, 3pt hitch.

Those 2 rows are real popular with the food plot guys.$500 to $1000 would be my guess as to 'value'

He has my grandfathers old one, not sure what model, but it doesn't have fertilizer hoppers. We do an acre of pumpkins, and some sweet corn with it, but this one is about 40 years newer.

Delta Red is right on. I bought two planter units without a tool bar for $250.00 each and thought I got a good deal. BIL gave me a tool bar. check e-bay and you'll see them for 1000-1500.

So when you guys say a toolbar what exactly do you mean? Is it some kind of outfit that you put as many units on it as you want? When we were dairy farming we ran a 1290 JD planter. My brother has four of those he's drug home from around the neighborhood fence rows. Could the units of the 1290 be set up on said toolbar. I'm up in NNY so you guys must be from west of here.

Unit planters each have their own drive system, vs the 1290 has a common shaft driving all units.

The 'toolbar' is the bar the things are mounted to.Usually a 2 1/4" diamond. Here is a pic of my #70 mounted up on a double bar setup. And yes I am west of you-way west.Western Colorado

Well my brother got them bought $200 for the pair. I think that was apretty good steal. Now I see what you mean about the toolbar set-up. Pretty neat looking set up you got there. Thanks for the advice.

A tool bar is also what most larger rear mount cultivators has the tillage units fastened on as well. Too much work but the cultivators I had you could have changed out the cultivator units for those planting units and then back to cultivating with the same tool bar.
