About a year ago I wrote about how our local county executive proved even politicians aren't above the laws of physics when he and his driver were nearly killed in a car crash. Neither were wearing seat belts. A few days ago my wife and I were out to dinner, and by chance the man himself walked into the restaurant. He was looking pretty good, a little frail and using a cane, but clearly in good spirits and enjoying the attention lavished on him by the patrons and staff of the restaurant.

He's a tough old buzzard. In his seventies, he easily won re-election last fall despite being confined to a wheelchair and barely able to speak. Since the accident, he has gone on record in favor of seat belt use, saying he's the "poster child" for seat belts. His driver, a retired state trooper, wasn't so fortunate: the crash left him paralyzed. Guess he'll never need to buckle up again.

For sure, if you're in a car accident it doesnt matter if you're a politician or not or what your profession may be WELL DUH, the proper use of seat belts more often then not can save your life based on what I've read and my engineers perspective (laws of physics, inertia, kinetic energy, etc. etc.). Of coure, you can still exercise the choice NOT to wear them, for which you may or may not get a ticket or may or may not survive an accident YOUR LIFE YOUR RISK YOUR CHOICE. Personally, based on the studies and statistics I've seen, I choose to wear mine (and assume the consequences) and raised my kids that way, but if a person chooses otherwise he assumes his risk and consequences....

Make wise choices people, regardless of your occupation, politician or not, keep safe
