Todays showpigs ?

Back when i was in 4h my hogs were tall and leggy. These hogs now look like weiner dogs to me ,really long with stubby legs . Anyone notice the difference ?

I've been out of hogs for quite a few years now, but last spring I was looking at some 'modern' hogs that looked like they had some of the old Landrace breeding in them, kind of long and lanky with floppy ears and short legs. Landrace's were dumber'n a rock. I suppose that carried through too? Jim

We were a a county fair last weekend. Today's hogs look like what we were striving to achieve back in the 1970's: long and meaty.

Landrace hogs were tough for me to work with too, until I finally realized they couldn't see more than three feet in front of themselves without lifting their heads way up high. After I took that into account they handled just as well as any other breed of hogs.

Yes the show pigs today are low to the ground and muscles are defined. Here's some pics of my sons for this years fair witch is next week. Jim

Some of the hogs I used to haul to market had 2" of backfat at 240 pounds. For awhile they were docking for anything over 220. Today a 300 pounder probably has less backfat than the 220 pounder did thirty years ago. Less flavor on the grille too.

SS55 I suppose you are right about the ears hanging down in front of the eyes. I always thought their brains WERE in their ears. LOL Jim
