glass jar bypass oil filter

Has anyone ever seen a glass jar bypass oil filter used on engines or have an example of one? I've only seen a drawing that showed a mason or ball jar. I'd like to know if this was ever actually used. Thanks, Joe

Wow- a glass jar to hold your oil supply? What could possibly go wrong?

I have a bypass filter on my Hudson, and the consensus is, take it off and plug the holes with pipe plugs, for all the good it does. Its fed by rubber tubing, which deteriorates- and can end up pumping your oil out onto the highway. Kind of like breaking a glass jar.

Never saw a glass jar used as oil filter but will just say this. My late uncle was a Chevrolet mechanic most of his adult life. He always said that the bypass type filter chev used, (40's and 50's) bolted to the manifold with u-clamps caused many more engine failures than the lack of a filter ever caused.

Mike, Thanks for your response. I'm not interested though in the pros and cons of a glass filter housing as this is obvious. That wasn't my question. I'm interested in the history and example of these filters. Such as, did it use a replaceable element, was the jar used with 'homemade' filtering material, and other related info. Thanks, Joe

Pete, Since I'm not a Chevy person I can't speak to your Uncle's experiences. The bypass filter though has been used on Allis Chalmers engines for many years with no apparent problems but that's not an answer to my question. Thanks anyway.

My reply was just to add a little to the discussion. I know it was not an answer to your question. I am very familiar with by pass filters as that is about the only kind used up until the mid 50's and even later. Even the ones bolted to the block like on a H or M farmall is nothing more than a bypass filter. My whole point was that hanging a filter on with a clamp and a couple hoses running to it can be trouble some. Never heard of a glass oil filter though so can't help you with your question.
