Gotta laugh or cry

I don't know whether to laugh my fool head off or be insulted like never before. I just got turned down for a credit card. I've never had one, never wanted one, haven't got any debt, haven't had for a while.

I called Enterprise a few weeks ago to reserve a car to drive on vacation like we've done for the past two years. They asked if I had a credit card. I told them no,just the debit card we'd used the last two times. They said the company was getting picky about that kind of thing, said they could do it if I jumped through enough hoops, but they preferred a credit card. I was at the bank two weeks ago, asked about a card for things like that if I REALLY had to use it. One of the higher ups said they had their own credit card, but they weren't a big enough bank to do it on their own so they went through another bank, but their name was on it. She said there was no charge if I didn't use it,no charge if I paid it off within 25 days, all that stuff. I told her the situation with Enterprise. She said if I wanted one,she could fax the paperwork so I'd have it within two weeks. I went ahead and did it,although VERY apprehensively.

So today,I get a DENIAL in the mail! Said I don't have enough account activity, not enough recent payment history, something about national credit history etc.

I guess the only way they want you is if they know you won't pay so they can make a bunch of money off of you.

I might have to go buy a new car so I don't have to rent one. lol

You remind me, about 100 years ago in Van Wert co. Ohio was a man by the name of George Marsh. (you can google Marsh Foundation, Van Wert, Ohio) He was one of the wealthiest men around. He was in another state where he wasn't known. He went to a bank and asked for a loan and was denied. So his solution was to buy controlling interest in that bank.

A neighbor by me had a similar problem...he gave his son a couiple acers of the farmstead to put a house on for his young family....Kid had saved enough money to buy all the material to rough in the house including well & septic. Kid had only worked on dad's farm , and odd cash jobs for neighbors. He went to the bank to get a loan to finish the inside of the house...basically 15K , was putting the property up as security(was appraised at 60K + just for the acreage) DENIED....not enough job history...so Dad went to the bank he has been dealing with for 40 years...had several loans thru them ...all payed early, had cash in saving & checking....Denied....lack of credit history...due to no current loans and or credit cards...the last loan he had was paid in full 2 years early and it had been over 10 years....Kid ended up getting an off farm job, and got a high interest loan to finish the house...and he also paid off the loan early....Cash is King....unless you need a credit card, and then no credit history is worse than a bad one....Shawn

I never have been a fan of bankers but now the local bank, no matter how well they know you, are not allowed to make decisions for themselves.

The only way you can get credit is to be knee deep in debt. If you don't have a good credit score, you can't borrow any money. If you can't borrow money, how do you get a credit score. DUH!!!Whatever happened to walking into a local bank that knew you by your first name and making a loan and walking out.I used to do it all the time.I don't need to borrow any money any more so I couldn't borrow any if I wanted to, because I don't have a credit score.

What happened is the housing meltdown. After that people were yelling that the government needed to make the banks tighten up on lending. So now we have all these new rules that affect any lender that is FDIC insured.

That's a fairly common scenario for people who don't live on credit.
Of course the more you apply for the worse it makes your credit look,
but it would be worth getting one eventually. For renting a car as you
say and a credit card is actually safer to purchase with online than a debit card.
One thought might be to have the wife apply for one just in her name.
If she works off farm they might be more willing to take the chance.
Not sure that would help along the 127 corridor though! ;)

It does pizz you off when you are not in the hole financially and you get turned down because you have worked your azz off.
I was in my bank a few years back finishing making a cash withdrawal and this woman at desk away from the teller says to me with a nice smile ...."Would you like to take out a loan", I smiled back and said..."I loan money to YOU.....I do not take out bank loans" She looked at me as if I was kind of a jerk and I walked out. I am waiting for the day when a bank charges me money to put money in a savings account. The interest rates cannot go any lower.

In this day and age, you need at least one real credit card. In other words, a Visa card, and not a debit card. Very few major car rental agencies will rent to someone with no credit card, at least not without a substantial cash deposit. Plus, doing business over the internet using a debit card is not particularly wise, since debit cards don't offer the same level of consumer fraud protection as do credit cards. Lending agencies tend to look askance at anyone who's old enough to drink but doesn't hold a credit card.

First, you should pull your credit report from all three agencies. Or at least one. You can get one report a year from each agency by going through annualcreditreport.com. Do NOT go to "freecreditreport.com" or other similar-sounding sites; they are all scams. The report will show your various accounts and credit history. Although you won't get your credit score (aka "FICO score"), you can pay a small fee and get it as well.

Since you had credit denied, you're enitled to a copy of your credit report anyway, but it's probably simpler just to go to annualcreditreport.com. At any rate, review your report for any errors, and start working on getting them fixed.

Now write a letter to your bank president, or go down there in person, and ask why you were denied. Given that the card was to be issued by a third party, they may not even be aware of your rejection. Don't let them off easy; point out your history with them and list out all your past and present loans with them. If you have a long history, there is no reason they shouldn't issue you a card.

The first card is always the hardest. After that, the offers come streaming in.

Oh I've got no doubt that they don't know about it. I'm sure they'll be pretty darned surprised to hear it when I tell'em.

There's really no such thing. That's what I asked about at the bank in the first place. Kelly said "you can use your debit card for credit, just tell them credit when you use it". Well, you can specify at a store, but it's not really credit and she said I was right technically. That's when I told her about the whole car rental thing and she told me I was right,it wasn't a real credit card. Said there was no such thing as a dual purpose card like that. I went to Visa's web site and checked,no such thing when it comes down to it.

That's about the boat I'm in. I'm pretty sure I could still borrow money from the bank if I filled out a new financial statement and gave them a copy of some tax forms, but it's still agravating that the bank that THEY go through for credit cards turned me down. Like I said,I hoped to get through life without ever having one, looks like it's not even an option.

Starting to feel like Foghorn Leghorn when he married the widow hen just to take her away from the dog. He was celebrating saying "I won! I won! Hey,wait a minute, there must have been some way I could have lost!". I should just laugh it off,not dig in and try harder to get one now just because they turned me down.

Kind of hard to live with out one of those things these days. They are easier to carry around then a suitcase full of cash and that is just for filling up the vehicles. We pay off balance every month in full so it really is a interest free loan.

we were out west two years ago and we would come to places that wouldnt take a debt but would take a credit then 400 miles from there it was just the opposite. Then after 900 at night they wont take cash either,so sometimes you cant win no mater how you play the game

tHIS IS NOTHING NEW RR Same goes for a woman who never worked and husband died nothing in her name. I am not a banker but 1. go to bank manager you know and exsplain it (he may write letter they might give you a low limit). 2 places like sears (and department stores) have those card with offers, 10% off. Get one buy something and pay it off it builds credit quick!!! They have a prepaid card now but i don't know to much about it.

Use to have credit card's, no more. Got rid of them. Every year they added annual fee's and etc. that were never on the card. Would have to call and argue with them until they would finally take them off. Got tired of the hassle and got rid of them. If I want to rent a car I just go to the local car dealer that I have always did business with and rent one.

That pocket full of cash you gave me will spend real good along the way though.lol

Did'ja get those things unloaded alright without tearing up your truck?

Sounds like a guy here. He's passed away back in the mid 60s,but they said he went in to the local bank in the 20s wanting a loan and they turned him down. I guess he got up and told them he'd have money when they closed the doors of that place. They claim he was driving a herd of cattle down main street the day they locked the bank during the depression. Said he hollered at'em and said I told you so.

He held the mortgage on a lot of houses around here for a lot of years. I know his widow still held a few and was still loaning money in the mid 70s. They say at one time he owned all the milk routes and all the trucks hauling in to the local milk plant.

The real blich of it is,the guy I was telling about a few months back who said he saw the gates of hell during heart surgery filed bankruptcy ten years or so ago. Story was that he owed over $350,000 on credit cards at the time. Somebody asked him how in the world you get in to debt $350,000 on credit cards? He said it was pretty simple. Every time they sent him one,he activated it and used it.

At least I'm not alone. I buy a good bit of stuff over the Internet, in the past I give them my debit card number. Now, have to go through PayPal. Maybe we need to quit buying on line. My request for a credit card was turned down because I had no credit.

The last time I tried to borrow money, 1975. The banker would not even let me in his office. I had the money in the bank, pulled it, bought what I wanted, 1975 Honda 750, moved everything out of this bank and haven't tried to borrow money since.

I'll send you a weeks worth of applications that I get in the mail all the time and you can apply again.

A neighboring farmer and good friend of mine who is I think 66 years old tried to borrow a little money to buy a 240 acre farm and was denied because he had no credit history. He had farmed his whole life and never borrowed money or had a credit card. He probably had enough saved for a 75% down payment. He eventually did get the farm and paid it off in six or seven years. It's too bad the conservative person who deals in cash is technically thought of as a bad risk. Jim

This happened in the 60's. Knew a fellow that was about to retire from the army so was going to buy a house. Had no credit. Bank told him to go to Sears and buy a washer and dryer and charge it to get a line of credit then come back.
Had a president of a bank tell me, the only way we could treat these old people any worse is to tell them to take their money home and put it in a matress.

rrlund,
We don't have a credit card either (except) what we do is have a pre paid credit card, you put as much or as little money as you want on it. Some have a 30 day wait period before you can add more money, some doesn't matter. We use it when only necessary. It sure beats paying 22% APR monthly, and we know exactly what's in there. No hidden fee's or rate changes, just a good way for us to go_Other people may not like it,but works for us.Hope this helps, worth looking into.
Regards,LOU

Yep, once I played musical tractors enough to get the loader
tractor out, it was pretty easy. LOL
I chained them to both sides of the bucket so they'd lift out kind
of flat to get enough clearance. Not sure I would have had to, but
it worked out well to set them down flat too.
Now I've got my King Kutter up for sale.
Enjoy your vacation!

Banks can be a PIA here too. I could not find my chequebook ( OK checkbook!) so I phoned my bank and asked for a new one. They asked me if I would like the old one frozen just in case it had been lost or stolen. I said "Oh yes good idea!" then of course she told me that if I did find the old one in the meantime not to use it as it would now be invalid. OK so the new book arrives and I write out 5 checks from it and every one bounces! In a panic I phoned my bank to find out what the problem was. They had accidentally frozen my NEW checkbook instead of the old one. I was very annoyed! Fortunately the old book reappeared.

Having good standing with a credit agency these days means that you have to have debt. Isn't that sick?

Things are so messed up now that everyone figured out how to cheat the system. It ruins it for everyone.

Pay with actual cash nowadays at the rental agency and they might send your name & address to the police as a possible drug dealer!

Go shopping for a credit card; never know when you might need it.

I stopped buying from ebay when they went paypal.Bought tractor parts and supplies for my shop.Made 136 buys and quit.

I had one credit card I used all the time and another I hadn't activated yet. Well I went to get a loan once and was denied because I had too much credit available...

I never heard of that till then, but have heard about others have this happening to them since then. I had to cancel the one credit card that wasn't activated in order to get the loan I needed. All is good now.

Ain"t nothing wrong with having credit cards. We have three, one has a 500 limit that is used exclusively on line. Our main one is used constantly, pays cash back to the tune of $1000.00 last year. We never carry over a balance so there is no interest, no annual fee. Third one we never use, back up for emergencies, no annual.
I also have a lowes and one from a tire store that is interest free if paid in 6 months.
Credit cards are just another tool that can be used or abused nothing evil about them. If I wanted I could go out and put myself hopelessly in debt in one day.
Sign up for Credit Karma, it is a real handy service, Gives you your credit score, alerts you to credit checks, and explains a lot about how the credit industry works.
At the present time we are utilizing about 12% of our available credit and have a score ranging from 780 t0 815 depending on the rater, all three of them use slightly different systems.
Only problem is that every car dealer and real estate agent in the county stuff our mail box begging us to buy something.

There are debit cards that can be used as credit cards. I have one from my bank. It is a debit card but also has the Visa logo on it. It will swipe and read as a credit card, but immediately debits your bank account for the purchase. It does not extend any credit.

Yes,I have one of those. The only thing different if you choose credit instead of debit is that you don't have to enter a pin. Enterprise is reluctant to take those anymore without jumping through a lot of hoops.
