are you using them for internet? If yes, then you will be very sorry with DirectTV internet. Same for Dish network internet, BUT, I have been pleased for 13 years with Dishnetwork TV.

I think Dish is offering a Ipad thingy for new customers, I've got direct, I like them 'cus when I call them I get a 'mercan on the phone

I have been a Direct TV customer for 15+ years with virtually no problems. I just have regular service with local channels and no HD. Of course you will have outages during heavy rain and thunderstorms.

John,
2nd try, site killed the first one.

We have DTV just for the TV. Ours cost 150 mo for 2 receivers and the premium package.Ours has the HDTV with record possibilities.
Includes HBO Cin- showtime starz with western channel all the ones but the nudy ones. If you have kids, you may want to block HBO Cin on friday and saturday nights (oh chit, it's saturday, I'm missing my movies for deep breathing)lol. At my age those type of movies don't interest me.All thats allowed now is hallway cex--- Thats where you meet your spouse in the hallway and say FU. I need to get to the bathroom.lol.

Watch them for their promo package deals, starts low but increases if you don't watch them they will increase it whenever they want. Best part is you get to tell when heavy rain or snow is coming, atleast 10-15 minutes ahead of time. Picture looks like a jigsaw puzzle, with a few pieces missing. Then the great message--- Please wait.... Searching for signal...
Which sometimes is more entertaining than the programs, Only other downside is they play the same movies over and over till you know them by heart in your sleep.Even the regular TV shows are mostly all repeats.
I liked our BUD (Big ugly Dish) cheap programming, we used to pay 45 per month for all the movie channels and premium package. But newer is better,or so we're told. Just like you guys know about newer tractors and vehicles.lol

Anyway the choice is yours, all the same to me. Happy shopping.
Regards,
LOU

Had it for 5 years, got tired of rolling blackouts on several channels when special programs were running and arbitrary price increases with no prior notice. Would not have it again. Let the buyer beware!

I liked our BUD (Big ugly Dish) Regards,
LOU
First off, Lou's acronym "BUD" had one word wrong. It's Big ULTIMATE Dish :) DirecTv and Dish have a "LSD", Little Silly Dish or a Pizza Pan :)
We have had Dish at home since '98. My mother and FIL had DirecTv and we had switched to DirecTv on campus (my 6 beautiful BUDs were no longer used). So, I have experience with both LSD services. To notice a difference between DirecTv and Dish picture quality you would have to have them side by side and somebody with a critical eye to point any difference out. Both services experience "rain fade" when there is heavy rain between your dish and the satellite. At our location Dish gives us a warning and DirecTv lets us know somebody south of us is getting a storm. On campus I didn't deal with consumer level customer service, but I have here and mom's. I have experienced better customer service with Dish than I did DirecTv. If you compare package prices I believe you will find Dish is a better value. As Lou mentioned, watch out for DirecTv introductory price and what you'll be paying in a year. I believe Dish has more advanced technology, especially with their "Hopper and Joey".

Just my opinion

Had it since about '97. No regrets, but there really was no alternative at that time. No cable within miles of us, over-the-air blocked by hills, so it was Dish or DirecTV. DirecTV won based on technical maturity at the time, and a little better programming packages.

The term Big Ugly Dish was coined by some one observing how big and ugly they were sitting in folks yard, Couldn't hide em in the rose bushes or tree line or hedges. The dish required pin point accuracy and the servo motor and arms had to work free and the radius of the dish travel kept us hoping. It was purchased as used. Worked for us a long time. Sure was a BIG UGLY DISH setting in the yard collecting birds from time to time, Just explaining BUD, LOU

Had Dish Network for many years. Switched to DirecTV due to very poor Dish customer service. I'd say DTV customer service is better than Dish, while quality of the reception and programming is about the same. Both are quite expensive once you're out of the introductory pricing.

We just bought a new HD TV and I need to do something. I may just pull the plug for a while and go with local broadcast. It's infuriating that HD on broadcast is free, but the satellite services charge a premium for HD.

Have had both direct and dish, gigantic rip off!!You are subjected to about 30 minutes of commercials every hour, get 130 channels, only about 10 worth watching!

That's my only complaint, a charge for HD, charge for 2nd receiver, charge for this and that.

TV now costs what a car payment was in the 80's.

I like the NFL and the documentaries too much or I would consider doing without it.

Had them for 10 years or so..not bad service. Got rid of them and just read books now...Only have the local air channels . And saved fifty bucks a month...

No cable out here, have had both Dish and Direct. Direct seems better, had it for over 10 years.

I've had Direct TV since. it came out. No matter who you use, they are going to stick it to you after the initial pricing offer. Son just signed with Comcast for a 45% savings over Direct TV.
Probably be back to Direct in a few years.

They're just as big a crook as cable. Price goes up 2-3 times a year, content mostly sucks. If you want 1 or 2 specific channels, it comes bundled with 50 other channels you wouldn't watch at gunpoint.

If it weren't for SWMBO, there wouldn't be ANY TV at my house. Can't get broadcast since they went digital, hate paying for 100 channels of crap.

Just remember that no matter what service you get, they only way to get a half-way decent price is to be a new customer. You can not get a decent monthly price if you are a loyal customer.

Had Prime Star first and they were bought out by DTV. For no more then I watch TV it seems expensive. If it wasn't for a few shows the wife watches I would get ride of it. Seems like they have a price increase every year.

I have Direct TV. No problems except during heavy rain storms.Lose signal some times. Good service.

My brother has Dish. Switching to Dish as soon as his contract is up.Tired of talking to the people in India. When he needs help.

Cable went the way of bad options. in response to the bright idea they had to force phone internet and TV on every customer. We are happy. The internet is wireless and with a pretty strong signal.
When we need a TV show we use Netflicks, or one of the streaming video sites.
I read 2 books a week. Jim

We're with Jim on this. We flip-flop between Netflix and hulu plus depending on the month. Hulu plus has more current show especially from ABC. It's only $8 and it's kept us entertained for the last year and a half. John

I am in Wisconsin. Direct TV advertised that on the average a customer loses about 15min of service per year,(?) We lost way more than that and so we switched to Dish. I pay $29.99 a month for their basic package. When I get the Direct TV flyer in the mail, they go straight in the garbage. Yes, we still lose the signal, but only half as much as DTV.
SDE

We have had DirectTV for about 3 years, the wife loves it, I hate it. Service is not the issue, if you love watching the some shows over and over again, with half the channels they give being pay per view movie channels or sales pitches - should be fine for you. For me I have told the wife I am ready to take the wire cutters to the cable and power cords. Only so many reruns of Storage Wars and Jurassic Park one person can take.

John Even though you didn't really ask,, Depending on your viewing habits Dish May be a getter choice only using this Rule of Thumb.....
* If you are a Dyed in the Wool Sports watcher....Any and All Sports, then Direct is probably the better avenue,.....If Not the Dish is the better one. Deals with packaging. We have had Dish for as long as it has been around. No real complaints.
Don't believe that you will have a $40 Direct bill it will likely be more like $60 to $80/ month after it all settles out in a yr or so especially when you want a particular Channel and you have to move up the the next package to get what you want...... Just the way it All is.
Hope this helps!
Later,
John A.

I used Primestar when it first came out also and got tired of Mike Rowe's face telling us how great it was when you were already a customer. There were enough commercials as it was for something you had to pay to get.

Then went to DirecTV and got tired of their price gouging. Now I'm with Dish and it's better than DTV but still not all that great.

What chaps you is that you have to take the basic package and all that is is commercial after commercial...then you get religion, and a bunch of stuff for sale, the cooking shows, and the hyped up real estate sales sham (opinion) and this and that which I don't care for, but I am not the general public. Once you get past that basic cost you can settle down into some movie channels that are commercial free and usually pretty good entertainment.

I'd still take it over just local channels. My bill has inched back up to $64.

Mark

I put up a tower and go with local TV. It cost me 500 bucks 7 years ago. I'm not a big TV person. I do miss watching some sporting events that I can't get. But I'm not that big of a sports fan to have to commit to a monthly cable bill. Seems like I here too many bad stories from others about their cable or TV bill.

We've had them all, Primestar, Direct and Dish. It's all expensive, but no where near as expensive as our local cable. I pay for a premium package so I can get RFD and The Western channel. It stinks. What I have is 250 channels of which we watch maybe 20 of. We watch zero sports, zero s ex channels, zero black or hispanic channels, zero sales channels, only 2 news channels and one religious channel (They show Roy Rogers!) Beyond Syfy, USA, TCM, AMC, some kids channels, RFD, The Blaze and Fox news, History and military and the westerns...we don't watch anything else. Oh yeah, and my wifes murder channels. How anyone can watch Law and Order is beyond me. Anyway, the point is we should be offer3ed ala carte programming. It's more than technically possible and it would save us all money. And that's why it will never happen!

we dumped direct tv and went with dish its a little better but personally i have to record the old shows in the wee hours of the morning or daytime, otherwise depending on what you like you wind up with 300 channels of nothing in the evening, poor quality acting in sitcoms cooking shows and teeny bopper stuff , makes you wonder the age of the people who make up the programming, 20 something?

Yep , we had that . Like i said HAD it . every time it rained or snowed we had nothing , but ya still paid for nothing .so one day in one of my grumpier moods they happened to call as the War Dept. had not sent in the payment yet and when the lady got a little mouthy with me i told her to take her nothing to watch loose signal with every drop of rain system and stuff it up her donkey . went and bought a good antenna and net flix box . Now when it is storming outside we can still get the weather and local news . And put over eighty bucks back in our pockets . Next to go is the landline phone.

Thanks guys
I was looking at the bottom package (29.99) to start regular price 54.99 plus 6.00 for the extra TV
No HD receiver; No whole house DVD; No premium channels; No sports package; just basic service.

That's about $10 a month less than what I pay for cable now and has a few more channels I do not get.
I was mostly asking about their customer service and how it works in bad weather

I am just tired of my cable company. Every time they change a channel over to HD I loose it because I do not have HD service. But the price keeps going up. I had a service line tech tell me they are going to total HD service and either trying to force everyone to switch over or go elsewhere.
Well I am choosing to go elsewhere.

15 years ago cable starting raising prices to "improve quality" but out in country it never improved - just higher prices. went with direct tv, stayed with them 10 years, got too high, switched to dish, promos last 2 years then prices go up, swithced to direct-new promo------plan on switching every 2 years, already have both antennas , hey its their game and rules, I will use them to my $$ advantage

Yo John. Up here in God's country (North Louisiana) I have Direct TV. I love it. Mostly watch the RFD-TV, The Hitler Channel, and a couple of others. Make sure you get the receiver that lets you record programs. You won't regret that.

I have had both Directv and Dishnet and honestly can't say that one is better than the other, kind of like Ford is better than Chev. I do know that at the end of your two year contract, Directv will negotiate a price for an additional year to stay with them. Dish-net told me to do what you have to do, they would not budge on there price. When I switched, than they wanted me back.

We have Direct and wouldn't change for anything, yes it goes out for a few minutes during a rain storm, but what's 5-10 minutes. Customer service is awesome. Price increases occur, but what doesn't go up. I don't know anything about Dish but I have friends that have Dish and they like it. Good luck in your decision.

Ive had DTV almost since day 1! In fact, just did some upgrades last week. Lady on the phone said I had the lowest numbered account number we have been with them so long. I can take a spare dish along when/if we go camping, one of my home receivers, and watch the same shows we enjoy at home. Yes, its a little pricey, but that's one of the few things we actually can do as a family anymore is watch TV.

i've got Direct Tv,had it for almost 2 years...no real complaints other than theres maybe 15 channels i actually watch...if you like sports theres plenty [i'd just as soon watch grass grow] promotion deal i got is fixin to run out and gonna get expensive...if i can't get price pared down to my budget gonna pull plug...had dish network for close to 20 years...they screwed me and i told them to stick it.

Mother-in-law has direct and we have dishnet. the better half says direct has a better DV; more easily used, but otherwise likes dishnet. But the internet can supply about everything free. ROKU was being discussed on one of the business channels roughly a month ago, and the company's president said it was possible to program the device so that you could get nearly everything free legally; you just can't copy the programs. However he said his company was not going at this time to provide the programing. ROKUs are cheap and we use ours for a Netflex interface. Gave the impression things are pretty good and doesn't want to "rock the boat" and cause an industry melt down. Personally unwilling to develop the skills to program it so unless my son eventually does it, we will continue to be robbed.

I had no problems with regular old fashion tv. Then the government got involved and ruined it. Digital boxes were not much good. Wife bought direct tv and it sure is not worth all the money. All the rain this year it was out alot.

Nobody mentioned if i remember right name? Rabbit jack?

When we have checked with them we found out you don't get any local channels for your local news so not interested.

We switched from cable to dish and they have local chanels. Cable was $105 per mo. Dish is $40. We like it. Roy
