Another way to litter my farm

Luminaries - the air born kind. Was out doing outside chores, grain and water for sheep and goats. Looked up in the sky and there they were. Gray spheres the size of large beach balls, tumbling and rolling in the air. Must have been 500 feet or more up. Watched them tumble down, landing on my farm. Recovered four. Paper globes with wire framework underneath. Was little dismayed to find they had AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY logo. We"ve had a go-around with cancer, and I think they could have spent the money more wisely. Plus, I don"t need them in the hay to tangle up in the machinery. Not impressed.

Chinese lanterns??? They seem to be the in thing lately... Have friends in the UK who have had major problems with them. Big fire caused by them there last week

RayP.

I found the remains of those things last year. The paper had all disinigrated--it was like tissue. I wondered what they were. Mine had a thin bamboo ring with wires across.

Yeah, chinese lanterns... Three landed in recently harvested hayfield, the other in a swamp. Fortunately none landed in my ready to harvest grain. Looked like they burned out in the air, so not a problem, but could have been!

i keep finding mylar ballons all over my pasture...theres a small water park few miles south...i think theyre coming from it.

That wire frame will sure make you lose some time if it gets sucked in to your machine. The japanese sent baloons to the west coast during WW2 to start fires, Some had boms attached. Stan

Yeah. I saw a short video the other day of a middle aged guy and a woman lightening them and sending them aloft. Had to be urbanites. They were smiling and having a great time.

Around here the fire marshall would have them cited or in jail. We have a burn ban here and as stated, those things are just a fire waiting to happen. Had enough fires in the US for now.

Went to wife's class reunion a couple weeks ago. Held at one classmate's large, fancy house near Puget Sound. With forest all around.

One of the women brought 54 of the Chinese lanterns- one for each of the 54 classmates of the Class of '66 who has died. Everybody was supposed to take one with the name of someone they knew, and say some words as they lit and released the lantern. Wife took the one for her cousin's best friend, who was killed in Vietnam.

Nice idea but I gotta say, I was fearing the worst when those flaming things went off across the woods, and out of sight. The idea, of course, is that its the fire that's keeping them aloft, and they won't come down until the fire goes out. And I guess it worked- didn't set the woods on fire, at least this time. . .

Haven't found any Chinese Lanterns, but I have found a few mylar balloons, but the neatest thing that I found was a Radio-Sonde with a parachute attached. These are used for checking high-altitude weather conditions. In the cardboard box next to the battery, there is a canvas bag with a postage-paid return address card attached. You put the complete unit in the bag, tie it shut, and mark on the back of the card where it was found & the date and drop it in the nearest mail box.

We had them last year at our family gathering. I had never seen them before, a couple of the guys retrieved one that landed and thought up the idea of re-using it by soaking a rag in diesel fuel, it did take off but shortly burst into flames and crash landed, was sort of funny to watch but all was safe and no one got hurt.
