O/T Herbicides

I've got a question. This year yellow nutsedge is all over in our lawn. What chemical is there that can kill it without killing the grass?? I know Roundup does not kill the nutsedge.
Any one know?

Thanks,
John

I just googled nutsedge killer and it came up with all sorts of herbicides. I printed the page and taking with me to our tractor supply store tomorrow.

Sorry my friend, but you're flat out of luck. You can kill nutsedge (but it isn' easy) with various herbicides, but they will also kill your desirable grasses. Keep it mowed short to prevent the nutsedge from going to seed. I checked my United Suppliers Crop Protection Guide, and I can't find anything that is that selective.

Actually you have lots of options, you need to find a Golf supplier.

Bentazon (Basagram), halosulfuron (SedgeHammer, formerly Manage), and most recently sulfentrazone (Dismiss) are all effective postemergence herbicides. Sulfosulfuron (Certainty) is no longer labeled for use on cool- season grasses. Current recommendations from UNL include halosulfuron for postemergence (POST) control. Early POST control is excellent with halosulfuron. Spraying after June 21st with any systemic herbicide, could stimulate further germination of tubers, necessitating additional applications. Contact products, such as sulfosulfuron do not appear to release the dormancy of the daughter tubers, but these tubers will germinate the following spring/summer.

Basagran used to be the weapon of choise,BUT it has vanished from the face of the earth.Just can't be found around here anymore. So now we use a bit of gold called SEDGEHAMMER.When I say gold when you see the price you'll understand.Gonna spray some tomorrow on a field I'm gonna no-till in alfalfa.Good Luck.

Thanks for all the responses everyone posted. I'll try one of the herbicides and see what happens in a select spot of my grass area.

If I remember right, in the old days of Treflan and Prowl used to control nutsedge. We used Authority preplant this year instead of just RR. It sure paid off. Monsatan is probably sitting on a RR2 chemical that will be over $100 per gal as in the begining to control the out of control weeds we have now. Several around me are going back to non gmo because of RR residual in the soil. Of course with Clarence Thomas in Monsatan"s back pocket, they do not have to worry about anything.

I think you guys read the post wrong. He is trying to kill Nutsedge in the lawn. NOTHING I know of will put the hurt on Nutsedge and leave your lawn alone. Yes there are products that will kill, or at least hinder Nutsedge, but it will destroy your lawn in the process.

I'll pick one product, all I listed are for turf use. Used them in my 20+ years as a Golf Course Superintendent

I sprayed a lot of acres of sod fields with Basagran and never killed a blade of turf grass.
Today this is the answer.

Manage and sedgehammer come to mind. I apply lawn chemicals, for a living, problem with sedges is, that they often come to the site, in cheap mulch. So you have it in mulch, then you have it in the lawn, and forever battle between the 2.

Roundup WILL kill yellow nutsedge and I can take pictures if you need proof. I've got some low ground where I grow silage corn. Got it planted the 22nd of June, nutsedge came on bad. I sprayed it a week ago Tuesday. It's REAL yellow now.

You might try this:

Mix: 4 cups White Vinegar
1/4 cup table Salt
2 teaspoons of liquid Dishsoap

Spray onto target plants at full strength!

Works similar to Roundup - but a whole lot CHEAPER.
