I guess some of you turned my post about the gas rig fire political and got it booted before I could read the replies cause I can not find it.
Anyway the fire is out. The Coast Guard said the heat from the fire compromised the platform causing part of it to collapse. They think (not real sure) that from the rig collapsing the well casing got broken. This allowed sea water; sand; and silt to enter the well casing plugging it up. This cut off the flow of natural gas.
Environmental impact is said to be zero.
A relief well is being dug to intersect with the original well below the fracture. A cement plug will be installed to permanently seal the well casing.
We got off easy on this one.
