Case 885 overheating

I have a Case IH 885 with cab and A/C. I haven't had it very long and when we started cutting hay this season it started getting hot. I hooked a 9 ft Kuhn on a hay caddy and after about 2 hours it would run hot. I have replaced the heat sensor, flushed the engine with radiator flush and taken out the thermostat. This week I replaced the radiator and now it will get hot in about 30 min with just driving. When it got hot this week, the gauge showed almost to the red but I could put my hand on the radiator cap and it was warm, not hot. My next objective is to place another temp gauge on the tractor to see what the reading is. Any suggestions?

I am not a Case mechanic but it sounds like the water is not circulating. I would check the water pump out. If the impeller is damaged or lose on the shaft.

Also to help you on these type of problems. Buy your self a cheap infrared thermometer. Just point the red dot and read the Temp. Works great to see what is actually going on. The tractor may not be even getting hot. Bad gauge/sender.

I had an CaseIH 885, back in the early 90's. An mine was the same. Always hot. Realy have to say right on top of keeping the rad,oil cooler,AC condencer blew out with air. In some ways I like tht tractor but, they only gave them the same rad as smaller tractors of the sme series. I got rid of mine and bought a Maxam. So much more tractor, you would hardly believe. A 5130 CaseIh is almost the same HP, with none of the problems. You could put a temp gage on the tracotrs cooling system that has a simple sweep on the gage. Never thought the in dash gages seemed very good. Bruce

Update on the 885 tractor. It was several issues for it to overheat. 1. a bad temperature sending unit. 2. Radiator was pretty clogged with dirt and rust. and 3. Bad gauge inside the cab. My advice to others would be buy a universal temperature sensor kit that has both sensor and guage. These are cheap, I paid about $20 for the kit at the local auto parts store. Then try the radiator. Of course try to rod it first but that doesnt work then replace.
