Corn planter shopping

Between having a 6rn combine, and picking up another 120 acres for next year Im looking to retire my ancient 4rn White plant-air. My biggest concern is the extra 5ft of width, I can barely get my 4r to half of my fields. I see alot of 8r with end transport, but not any 6r with it. Are they out there or should I figure in a donahue planter trailer in my budget? Do they work pretty slick, or was it a case of good idea that didnt work out? If they work as slick as my header cart, i could see shelling out for one, but Ive never been around one. I'm still shopping around between a CIH cyclo, a JD 7000, or a newer White, but it doesn't matter what color it is if I cant get it to the field.!

We just bought a new planter and have our old one for sale. Got a 12-13 Black machine with Kinze units and liquid fert. Precision corn meters and JD radial bean meters. Keteen row firmers and new bolt on closing wheel arms. Every thing works on the monitor and electric fertilizer kit. Planted 800 acres this year. Washed and in the dry now.

If you can't get a 6 row planter through your gates, how you gonna get a 6 row corn head? I'd start making things wider so you can get a 6 row through. I know Kelderman made a front fold kit, so you might be able to buy a 6 row and a kit and make it fold up. Still don't see how a cornhead is gonna fit.

we had a four row 38" 7000 and then moved up to a six row JD max emerge on 30" rows. 4x38 = 152 inches or 152/12 = 12.66 feet. 6x30 = 180 inches or 180/12 = 15 feet, we didn't see a big difference in being able to move it around, you might have to widen some gates and be careful on the road with it.

Jim Donahue was my nieghbor. He got rich making those impliment trailers. they were pretty sharp in their day, but who wants to spend the time loading the things now. Pretty slow process.

I can JUST fit in a 16' gate with the 6 row 7000 on 30" rows. I actually think the 12 row 7200 is narrower than the 6 row.

I have only been around the Donahue's just a bit. Don't remember what the literature was for but it was for some sort of folding planter or conversion like Keldermen. Big problem with Donahues aside from the obvious is if you have many completely bare fields. IE you pull in drop the trailer then unhitch pull the planter off, then start planting, at some point you will have to move the trailer just to plant where it is sitting.

Someone else mentioned that Kinze makes a 6 row pivot fold. I didn't know they did but a look at their site gave me a quick education. Not sure where you are located but finding a used Kinze 6 row pivot I have to think would be difficult at best. If you have enough tractor think about a 12 row pivot fold. I have a 12/23 split row and pull it with a 2294 Case (130 horse). Saying that I wouldn't want much less of a tractor for that planter.

Another option would be picking up a end transport kit and putting it on a 6 row. There were companies like Wetherell and Kelderman that made end transport kits for 8 and 12 rows. and I think they could be adapted with a bit of work.

The 1760 folds around the ends to just a little wider than 6 rows. The 1770 folds down narrow enough that it fits through whatever gate your duals will fit through.

I"d go with a 6 or 12 row. Things go so much smoother (and quicker) when your planter and combine match.

6 row too small 12 too big. get 8 row with end transport, usually can get cheaper than 6or12. sold mine this spring for 4500 with transport. got white 6100 8 row for 4500, no transport, go down the road with wife following with truck

Donahue trailers were meant to use for parking the planter in a shed, thru doors too narrow to back the planter in to......not for transport between fields. I wouldn"t mess with a cumbersome trailer in the Spring for planting. Same with end transport planters- they were for parking in the shed. Widen gates.

The corn head fits because I set it off on a cart,
and pull it long ways down the road. Looking for the
Kelderman site now, thanks for the tip!

I believe the JD 7200 was offered in a way that was a 6 row where the two outside row units folded in.
