I finished the deer stand

Been working on this thing evenings and weekends for over a month now.
Finally finished the paneling and window trim inside of it yesterday.
I have about $200 in it. Almost everything - framing materials, sheathing, roofing, insulation, Door (with key to the lock), paneling, trim, siding etc all came from the free section on Craigslist.
I did donate some stuff that I had - some 2 bys, electrical stuff and the aluminum wrap for around the windows.
Bought the 4 thermopane windows for $60 and the tin to line the underside to keep the critters out. It's insulated R13 in the walls and R19 in the floor and ceiling.
I still need to put some kind of screens or see through curtains on the inside so they don't see in and carpet on the floor for sound proofing.
I built it in the driveway and then winched it onto the trailer.
Will probably bring it up to my land in the next couple of weeks.
Just going to set it on blocks on a promontory overlooking the extinct gravel pit where I hunt.
About 16' above the pit floor.
Made it juuust narrow enough to fit on the trailer.
It's about 6'6"X8'.
Even if I don't heat it it will still be better than freezing my rear end off sitting in an open stand like I've done for so many years.

Holy cow!

Just trying to keep it tactor related....

I"d seen many homes that would not be that nice!

Hope the bounty is plentiful.

Geez though I had something when I moved up to an elevated heated blind. Told my wife just last weekend that I'd like to build a nice one behind the house. If you've never tried one, those Buddy Heaters occasionally on sale at Fleet Farm for
65$ really work nice. No excuses about the weather this year!

I'm sure your gonna hear how you wasted time and money, you ain't a real hunter, bla bla bla. I think it looks real nice. You are a craftsman and it shows. I bet a candle will heat it as well as its insulated. Have fun and Good Luck!!

I'm sure that if you use one of those quiet Honda generators you could just use a small electric heater plugged into the wall. then you could bring a tv,(closed captioned) a small refrigerator and stay for the weekend. I expect the deer won't even notice a new home in their midst.lol gobble

Very nice, Jerry. Reminds me that I have to get mine insulated before season, preferably before I need to wear gloves while I'm doing it!
Are the windows high enough so you can use the sill as a rest while shooting?

That is going to provide some comfort, It looks like it would fit on top of common pipe scaffold, I have 2 stands of scaffold it would fit nicely on. I'm not sure what we do from these things is hunting so much as picking them off, LOL, but it does hide your movement, you can sit back in and there is no horizon/silhouette created behind you etc. More fun than an ice fishing shanty, I'll bet you will enjoy this to no end with a little heat, on an inclement day, which can be the best time to hunt sometimes if they move.

I have been tempted and could do the same, and not that I have anything to hide, where my place is, it would draw attention to my favorite spot, and who knows what that may bring, I had a NYS DEC law enforcement officer stop at my house a little over a week ago, and was looking to access the power line right of way, through our land, said there was some ATV's staged up there, I looked and saw none, I am not sure what the deal really was, I know how they operate, hook and bait, and as much as I respect these guys and follow the laws, something was up. You call for ATV trespass and its a hassle, understandably so. If on the up and up, I appreciate it, and their availability in the event of a problem, but in all the years I've never had a visit on this place by one. I think I would get more visits from them, or some other trouble if I built something like that, one thing I like best is peace and quiet while sitting in a stand, sure is tempting !

Looks great and I'll bet was low cost, most of all hides you, your scent and should be productive!

NICE blind, but are you going to shoot the Deer or let them live in it? Keep it mounted on the trailer, it would make a great portable Office in the "off season". Figuring the cost of the materials, the cost of your time & labor, deer tags, weapon & bullets, the cost of your time waiting to get that "perfect" Buck, etc.; then figure out the cost per pound "dressed", and that's going to be some PRETTY EXPENSIVE VENISON.

Beautiful work Ultra!
I'm curious what your plans are for the electrical outlets too.
I'd also like to know if wrapping the bottom in tin actually keeps
the mice out. I have that problem with mine here.
When I built my first one, a simple elevated platform on 4x4 stilts
with sides and a single slant roof, I set it out on the eve of season.
Shot a deer out of it opening morning.
The deer were curious of it, but it didn't seem to bother them at all.
I use a small propane "hot plate" on top of a Coleman camp stove
type propane bottle to heat mine if needed. The flame flickers, so
I keep it on the floor and shield it, then turn it off before dusk.
I don't light it in the morning until the sun is up and I'm good and cold!
Makes a good way to warm the coffee too! :)

Jerry,

If you cut a hole in the floor that would work great for ice fishing also. Nice job and way to go on repurposing material. If you ever get bored I have a lot of projects to do around the house. The old saying of not doing your profession at home rings true around here to some degree.

Good greif, you gonna live in that?

Mine is a few pallets wired to t-posts, and surrounded by a few old stumps. If"n some jerk decides to burn it down, I got almost nothing invested. After all I"m only going to spend a few hours in it over a couple weeks....

Soooo- you gonna shoot the deer, or invite them in for tea? That outfit would work either way. Nice job- it keeps your options open.

(quoted from post at 19:51:24 07/22/13)PRETTY EXPENSIVE VENISON.
All venison is expensive per pound. Specially so if you're a poor shot.
But like fine wine, good cheese, old tractors, etc. it's worth it! :)
"Vegetarian - Old Indian word for poor hunter." LOL

You could rent that out to workers in the oil fields of western ND for a thousand or more per month.

My!
A lot of replys.
A couple of thoughts here.
I didn't mention the electrical stuff because of the beating I took on Tool Talk for wanting to do a Billy Bob job of running power to it :)
I put 4 outlets and an overhead light/w switch in it.
I still don't know how I will get power run the 200' I need to go economically.
Running power from the rental house could easily cost twice what I've spent so far. That ISN'T going to happen.
Plan was to use a 1500 watt heater. We'll see.
I know this thing is rather over the top for a deer blind.
Original plan was to build a 4'X6' plywood hut but I just kept finding free stuff so the plan kept getting expanded. Mission creep.
It was fun to build though.
Kind of like building a doll house.
Thanks to all for the kind words.

Mark,
No. They're only about 26" high. Made them low so a guy can shoot at a downward angle. But a guy should be able to open the window a couple of inches, stick the barrel out and use the side of the window to steady against.

DC3,
Yes that kind of one way film/screening like you see in the back windows of pickups would be great.
Got to start looking for something. Cheap tho.

Get a portable propane catalytic heater- you can get them that just mount on top of your 5 gallon BBQ tank. They work fine, would heat that area, are odorless and are approved for indoor use. It doesn't burn the propane, it is a catalyzed chemical reaction that doesn't produce carbon monoxide.

Yeah Mike, that's the route I was thinking of too.
Hard to give up the elec coffee pot and can opener, heated vibrating easy chair, flat screen TV, WiFi, Fridge, microwave and electric blanket on the cot though.
Forget the rifle. Just go out there and watch the Monster Buck shows on Outdoor Channel.
