Any of you guys buying or selling small square bales of hay by the ton, roughly how many bales of good dry alfalfa/grass hay are you getting in a ton?

Here in Louisvillle area ,,you can buy out of field for 3-4 per bale ,, once in the barn $4-6 or more for good quality alfalfa.... by the ton , I would travel on craiglist and see what hay goes by the ton for ,, keep in mind the weather conditions in that area ,, seems like 140-180 per ton I saw in Nebraska a while back before this crop came in ...

I know a guy who sells hay and straw. You are lucky to get a 25 pound bale from him. He went to round bales and they are extremely small. Lucky if they weight 250 pounds. Next time he bales, I take a pic.

I don't see to many square bales selling by the ton - usually its "per bale". The basic unit being assumed that each bale will weigh about 50 pounds. I sold all of mine for $185 or so a ton figuring 60 pound wire bales.

A lot of big round bales are selling in the $140 - $160 range for Brome/Prairie bales.

USDA Report for July 16

Looks like I sold mine a little cheap.

My observation has been that most people's 50# bales are more like 35# and the 40# bales are more like 25#... and everything here is sold 'by the bale'. It's hard to compete when you actually have a 50-55# bale and need a price for it...
I saw somebody's '40#' bales of straw last fall. The boys were going with them 2 in each hand; 4 at a time...
So your ton could range anywhere from 80 bales down to 30-35 bales.

I had the same problem when I was doing small squares. I would actually make good sized, tight bales. Had a hard time with people telling me I wanted too much when I was 50 cents more a bale than the other guy who"s bales weighed half what mine did.

Got better when I went to rounds, now I sell by the ton. If a customer wants to buy by the bale, I base it off the per ton price. If they think I"m off on the weight of the bales, I have a scale 2 miles down the road and will gladly weigh them.

There used to be better money in small squares. I don"t think that is so true any more. A lot of grass hay/mix hay squares around here are being advertised for $4-$5 a bale. If they truly are 40-50lb bales, that"s around $80-$120 per ton. The worst rounds I have right now will bring $120 per ton.

14x18 bales here are in 31-33 per ton range, most are shipped to Colorado front range or to Florida The only thing that go in a small bale here is horse quality. Price I would guess at about 250 per ton loaded.

Here in southern Nevada, IF you can find someone growing it, good tight 60# bales of alfalfa are $10-12 in the field & $20-22 at the feed store.

I bale short tight 40 lb bales or longer loose 40 lb bales. The horse people like it and more importantly my help will put them up in the mow.

We are high $ around here at 3$ a bale. Not many folks higher, lots lower.

Been selling squares on rack for 200/ton.With hyd pressure at 225psi I get a 60lbbale,with hyd pressure at 175psi I get 53-55lb bale. That is with Nh 320 with hyd tension. That is for brome grass.Round bales are 125-150/ton so little suares need to be more for the extra work.If I don't have a order for them I roll it up. Northern Ia.

I sell my small square bales by the each, clean dry grass, I figure they weigh average 30 lbs each, that would be 66 to the ton. Were getting $3.75 this year, so were right at $250 per ton average. Hay supply is tight here this year.

There are 40, 50 lb bales in a ton. At$5 per bale that is $200 a ton.
I found that telling the buyers so much a lb is easier for them to figure the bale and ton price. For example 10 Cents a lb is 4.50 per bale and 200 dollars a ton. Or $6 for a 60 lb bale.
If you are selling ssb's be sure to buy a handheld digital scale.
