Case 420B backhoe

Morning folks, a guy about 40 miles from me has this tractor for sale in a local add. He claims it runs good but has very little power through the wheels. He says the backhoe was used for digging out stumps and rarely used the bucket. I heard a guy who went to buy it initially say it couldn't make it up the lowboy ramps and backed out of the deal. The owner is asking $3500 which seems a little high to me for a old unit with possible transmission issues. What's you opinion of these old backhoes for home-farm use, are any parts available and what would be a reasonable offer? If I can buy this thing right I have the shop to make something workable out of it but is it do-able? Thanks all, Tom B.

The issue of a weak tranny could be as simple as pluged filters, or a weak relief valve or pump, which supplies the torque converter. Parts are common to Ag tractors also. The pump and relief valve can be accessed without spliting the tractor. Check and see if the gauge under the dash, registers any pressure. Hop down to the Case Board and post further questions there.
Price wise, it sounds like there may be room for some dealing before you reach scrap value.
