Walking Plows

Hi all, I've seen a couple of posts about walking plows and when I was a kid there were lots of them around(not be used) but in the woods or scrap pile. Anyway what was the average size of them was it 12" or more or less.

In the Midwest I think that's about right. I've got a bunch here. Bought some pretty odd stuff in Kentucky and Tennessee. Some pony plows that aren't more than 6 inch. Several 8-10 inch left hand,right hand and two ways.
 
Thanks for the reply RR, boy its hard to imagine going out to plow with a team of horses or oxen with a 6 to 12" plow, its a small wonder most guys were old and worn out 50 yrs.

That little 6 inch pony plow came out of coal country I believe. They pulled the cars up out of the mines with ponies and there wasn't enough land around there for much more than a big garden. No real need for a mule,so as far as I know they pulled those little bitty things with those mine ponies.
 
I have two CASE walking plows. My steel beam is a 14" & my wood beam is 8" Both of theses were used in the Midwest. Gerald
 
Single horse plows tended to be 10" and under. In my area a team plow would be 12-16". Depends on the ground and team. On a Sulky 16" is common.

Myself, what little plowing I've done, I'd want a 16" plow even if it meant using a 3 up. Why? I got the worlds wost ankles! It's a lot easier to walk in a 16" furrow than a 12" furrow!

Thanks all for the replies, there has been several posts about walking plows and I was curious as to how big they were now I have a better idea. And I wish I had squired away a couple that use to be around home when I was young.
