Parts Tractor 3020

Bought this tractor for parts couple of months ago starter missing, engine not supposed to be good. My brother got around to starting it yesterday. It ran, engine noisy,hydraulics work good. ran about two minutes went to put it back in the same spot. Threw a rod and broke the side of the block. That's Good. I think that 3020 engine parts are real easy to find.

You will find that the balancer in the bottom of a JD 3020 is far from easy to find good ones. If you had stopped before it blew up then the old one could have been rebuilt for maybe $100-150. Now it is just Chinese scrap iron. A good one of those balancers can easily bring $500-600 dollars now.

Seems a waste of usable stuff to just tear it up for no good reason. If the engine is running rough why not shut it off FAST??? May have been just a simple crank grinding and bearings. Now many more parts needed.

I think you'll find out 3020 engine blocks are almost as scarce as hens teeth.

Seems to me a good waste of an engine block and money to run it after it was running noisy.

You are right My brother was trying to see if there were other issues to decide whether or not to try and fix it as we already have two other fully functional 3020 diesels. But he has another block standard crank and balancer from another parts tractor. Would not have run it more than a few seconds but he was trying to put it back after pulling it off. Always seem to make more work for yourself by saving some effort. Seems to be a pretty good old tractor I think it is still worth fixing.

The tractor looks well worth salvaging. It is shame about the block/crank on it. A good block/crank/balancer can easily bring $1500-2000 around here. The diesels are kept running more than the gas models. So far fewer for parts with more demand.

Is back half of your tractor still good? Maybe the front half of a salvage 3020 or 4020 powershift tractor with a bad transmission (too expensive to fix) will bolt up to your 3020 SR back half?

In our area 3020 diesels are the hardest popular JD to get parts for.I buy several nice side counsel tractors and actually prefer the 2520 to 3020 for power and smoothness of running.They are around 50 less cubic inches and 10H.P less but seem to handle a medium load better.Sometimes tractors bring more for parts than trying to fix them.
