Have a friend who is looking at one so I need to find out all I can about it and the problems they may or may not have. Said it has a Hercules 478 diesel in it serial number of the engine is said to be 4006373 and tractor serial number is 279811-414. So what year might this be?? Yes I will go and look in the serial number list in a moment. So what can you guys tell me about this tractor?? It has a cab and has A/C but the A/C does not work at this time but figure an upgrade to 134A will fix that I hope.
Thanks

The overall tractor is a good solid tractor. They are HEAVY so if you have wet fields you will find out how to pull it out. LOL The only draw back to them is the Hercules 478 diesel. It is a fairly good motor but when you go to overhaul it the parts are SKY HIGH!!!!. Some of the parts are available only through Agco. I overhauled one 2-3 years ago. The parts alone where over 9K.

They also do not have a very fast road gear. If you move a lot on the road you will notice this right off the bat. The rest of the drive line is just the same design Oliver/White used for years. Three speed Hydraul shift with a six speed transmission behind it. Same double H pattern that Oliver used for years.

The cab was not very large. So a passenger had better be real friendly. The AC systems where not the greatest cooling when brand new. On R134 they are worse. They barely have enough cooling capacity on real hot days. Visibility was good out of the cab.

Red cab interior means later model. The market on them is in the $10-15K Depending on condition. It takes a real sharp one to bring $15. I do mean sharp looking.

Thanks. This one is priced at $3600 and is close to where it will live. As for wet field this friend has a good number of them so I will warn him about that and he may find having an excavator handy in that case LOL

It must not be much of a looker for $3600. Should be double that easily but thats alot cheaper than anything red or green of that size. My uncle would never have one because of the cabs on them. As mentioned they are a heavy tractor. I've seen the neighbor pull his out of a field several times though I think it would be better with duals (his has singles). They use it almost as much as their 3020 Deere and these guys have a fleet of Deeres so it must be pretty good.

JD Seller, why do you keep spreading that lie about that 478 being expensive to overhaul? It's getting under my skin. I've told you until I'm blue in the face that it's the 585 in the 2-150 that's expensive and hard to get parts for. Look it up yourself. A complete kit for those from A&I is about $2800. If you don't need all of the parts in the kit,you can put in pistons, sleeves, rod and main bearings with parts right from Agco for less than $2000.

That said Rich, they're a darned good old tractor. Whites first totally new design after they put their name on the Oliver/Moline tractors. The 2-135 is the same tractor, just tuned down a little and available with a 540 PTO. That's the only drawback with the 2-155. 1000 PTO only.

If the price is right, that tractor will run forever with darned few problems.

Ya talked the the guy a bit later and it has 3600 hours on it and is going for $6500. He wants it more or less for the fact it has AC and since from what was said the AC does not work well my friend will keep looking

Well rrlund that darn tractor set in my shop for almost a month while the owner looked for cheaper parts at that time. Maybe there are cheaper kits available now but then there were not.

Here is the long and short of it. The White/Oliver tractors where a pretty good tractor with a lousy company selling them. The Company went broke. The Company that the brand evolved into is not so great on parts as far as price and availability. I have more troubles with AGCO than all the other brands put together. Maybe it is just the local dealers around here but none of them are real interested in fast or economical parts. It should not take 3 days to get common parts.

Maybe I am getting the reverse "cold shoulder" that the non JD guys talk about at their JD dealerships. I don't think that is the case though. I have several pieces of Agco part supplied equipment. The one I use the most is an Oliver 1655 that I bought with very few hours on it over 25 years ago. Like the tractor. Hate the hassle getting parts for it.

Old for the price mentioned your friend should jump on the tractor if it even runs or moves. For the price he can get it for you could sell it to any salvage yard and make money on it.
