Farmall H starter

I am wondering if someone can tell me why my H tractor starter doesn"t spin the tractor over very well. It seems as if it spins one time then I have to push starter button again same thing over and over until it fires. I have replaced the battery and get the same results. Help appreciated. Thanks

Have you cleaned all the battery cable connections?
Not just on the battery, but where they connect to the frame
and starter as well?
Also, if its still 6V, it should have some good heavy cables,
not little car ones.
If that doesn't do it, you might check the starter button itself.

Look at your cables might be a bad connection, try running the ground to a starter bolt (if it is a negitive ground system) all of the connections ought to be clean and bright.are the ends in good shape? firmly attched and free of corrosion? try the simple and cheap stuff first.

The starter drive, called the Bendix is shot. Pull the starter and buy a new drive, easy to install, do it your self.

Advanced timing will make that happen. Put the engine on TDC #1 (front) cylinder. The last mark that comes around to the pointer is TDC. If you put your thumb in #1 plug hole and turn it till there is air blowing out, then stop at that mark, it will be correct at TDC. If it is a standard distributor with separate coil, the following applies. Set the point gap at.020", and leave the rotor and cap off. Loosen the distributor bolts where it has a flange, allowing it to turn (not way loose, and don"t turn it). Mark the current position using a felt tip pen on the flange and drive housing. With a test light hooked to ground, and the terminal on the side of the distributor, key on, the light will be either lit or dark. Turn the distributor till the light just wants to flicker off and on. Shut off the switch, and tighten the distributor. Put the rotor and cap back on and see if it will start better.
If not, or if it was timed correctly before, Marks in the same place, the battery cables are the next task. they need to be size 0gauge. soldered and clean. the ground should go to a starter bolt to assure best amp flow.
This should make things happen, let us know. Jim

I agree with Jim, I will usually see if it cranks different with the ignition off versus on, that will take timing out of the equation first thing before tearing anything apart.

My H was doing the same thing. I replaced the ground cable with a braided strap. I couldn't believe how much faster the starter spun the engine.

I will give the cables a try. Just took starter off and put it on a different H and all is well. Spun it around no problem.

If those cables are old, there is probably corrosion on the twisted copper wires. Had that problem with one H that had a brand new battery. Stuck on new cables and it spun like crazy. I pulled the insulation off one of the old ones. Solid rust inside.
