need a little help on old truck

what i am up against is brake shoe return springs this is on a 1957 chevy 4400 with a single speed rearend, im restoring it for its original owner after it has slept for 40 years, the so far ive found 2 springs of the 4 broken in the hub, theyve been broke awhile.. some of the full line parts stores recignize the springs but cant find me any anywhere, these springs are 3 1/4 long and 1 inch around with hooks on both ends, have any of you got one of these old similer 2 tons from the 50's laying in the junk row? this has a completable truck stopped untill i solve this problem

I had to call my parts guy for something else, so I asked him
about getting those springs. He's pretty sure he could get them
if he had the diameter and width of the brake shoes.
Just another option if you run into a wall.

A good hardware store should have some springs that match up.

Jim Carter will have it. I have never found any parts on my old GMC that they don't have. Quick shipping, too.

Don't believe a 4400 is a 2 ton. I got a 6500, 55 model. 6500 is 2 ton long wheel base. 6400 is 2 ton short wheel base. 5500 and 5400 are 1&1/2 ton. 4400 is a 1 ton short wheel base. 4500 is a 1 ton long wheel base.

4400 is a ton and a half truck, long wheelbase. Jim carter is a good place to check. I needed brake springs for my 53 1 ton could not find them anywhere. Finally found someone who had an old book and looked them up, rock auto had them in stock.

it may be a ton and a half, it has a tag on the door of 14ooo gross, i have already been in touch with jim carpenter,they dont have these, im thinking the 4400 may be a odd size, the 6400 and 6500 are far more common , carquest has part numbers ect but none available, i got some from a old ihc truck rear end i have on the farm but there 1/2 inch too long and a bigger diameter ,

Check with Mutual Wheel Company. They have the springs you are wanting. I ran into this about two years ago on a neighbor's grain truck.

thanks i sent them a discription of what i need, we'llsee, i hope they have it i want to get this truck done so the man who owns it and bought it new can enjoy it again, he's 85 now and the clock is ticking,
