Just bought a 1950 AR from my uncle. A couple of questions. how do you hook up the batteries, and is there a ignition switch?

Does it have a magneto or dist.? If dist it will need an ign switch.

Thanks Jim it must have a mag there is no key type switch. there are however on the right side of the dash three pull type switches could one of these be a on/off type switch for the motor? had it running drove it home held the throttle back to kill the motor. I put 2 new batteries in it watched them be hooked up the next day they were dead took them out in the dark to put them on a charger now dummy me I can"t remember how to hook them up any help would be great Thanks

The batteries attach to tractor positive(+) to ground & negative(-) to starter solenoid. Yes one of the push-pull switches could be for ignition. You could trace the wiring to determine this fact.

Wiring may have been hacked up by the previous owner. Lights and ignition are supposed to be on one switch.
1-800-522-7448 for the owners manual will answer dozens of questions.

I remember selling the switch & keys that are in the attached parts photo when I stood behind a JD dealer parts counter.

that ar tractor uses 2 6 volt battery's. one on each side where the covers are. they hook up pos. to neg. from each other. i believe it is neg. ground. would have to run out and look on mine.switches are correct, top one i believe is ign. and btm. one lights. i have the same 1950 ar with the same switch positions.

I run 1 12 volt battery in my AR, makes things a lot more convenient. She's stroked and bored, but starts good even in the dead of winter. I have a rotary switch in my dash, First position is off, second is ignition, third is road lights, last is field lights.
