OT Yamaha Golf Car Brakes

Any of you had the brakes apart on a older golf car? It has drum brakes, and I don't think it stops very well.I have the wheels off, the hubs will move a little but won't come off. I can't see any place to back them off so the hubs will slide off. Is there any way to adjust the brakes? I took the pin out of the cable and the lever doesn't move much at all, is this normal? Thanks, Chris

You may have hit on the problem right there. The lever pivot may be rusted frozen. However I don't remember how to back off the adjuster.

Check the cables that run from the front to the brake drum. The cables rust and won't move. you can lift the floor between the brake pedal and the seat area and adjust the brake cable. This is where the cables attach. If you disconnect the cables at the rear by the drums it may free the brake shoes to allow you to pull the drum off. I have found it to be the cables and not worn brake shoes, but check anyway.

not sure what year your cart is, but my 02 has the brake adjuster under an access cover by the brake pedal. pull back the rubber matt, then lift the cover off. you will see the adjuster nut on the cable at the pedal linkage.

Some of the older yamaha carts have a square headed bolt on the top side of the backing plate that you adjust the shoes with, just back it out several turns. been a golf car mechanic for 41 years and only part time now and don t remember all the stuff.
