Well I went out to my asparagus patch yesterday evening and I couldn't stand the weeds an grass that has taken over my three new rows of asparagus I planted last year and this year.

So I decided to use the push mower and mow off the asparagus along with the weeds and grass. I then spread salt and fertilizer on top of the soil and set my tiller at 2" and tilled it all in. We'll see what happens. My asparagus is planted 8-10" deep so I have a good feeling it will be shooting up new sprouts that weren't contacted by the tines of the tiller.

asparagus is salt tolerant so the salt will not hurt it. I don't know about tilling it up like that so good luck. enjoy your asparagus. the deer killed mine by eating it all when it was too young.

You shouldn't have any problem. I burn and salt my asparagus at the end of the season. Use just enough salt to keep the weeds from growing.

I know the salt won't hurt the asparagus but I was wandering about tilling it. I'll let everyone know in about a week to ten days.

How much salt should a person use? I have salted my asparagus but some weed escapes still happen. A week or ten days ago I cut all the asparagus plants below the surface of the ground, covered the stumps with earth and sprayed the patch with Glyphosate. The Asparagus came back up and now is bushed and making seeds. I tried to include a pic but it won't upload tonight. Grrrr. Jim

John B.,

I told my husband to till my asparagus patch last year. It never grew back this year. Maybe he tilled too deep - but seems like my dad had an asparagus patch he could not kill-off, even when he tried.

Apparently asparagus does not like me. :)
