LPG Tractors/Pumps

Hey all,

Looking at buying an LPG tractor, and I'm trying to figure out how to go about filling it at home on the farm. Haven't owned an LPG tractor before, so not familiar with the procedure to fill one. I see there are LPG pumps available online for filling cylinders from a large home tank. Do these work at all? How simple are they to use? Do you just fasten one end to the valve on top of the home tank, and the other on to the cylinder being filled, then run the pump? Any other help or advice for filling an LPG tractor?

Thanks for any and all help!

Handful of ways to refuel a LP.

If you are in a remote area and using it only
occasionally you can just get a pressure hose
hooked up to the liquid side of your bulk tank.
You need to do this in a area that is well
ventilated cause you will need to vent off the
vapor side of the tractor tank. Also this needs
to be done with the tractor engine cool and you
need to wait for gases to blow away before
starting up. Really this method is only good for
the occasional user.

The next option is a Krug hand pump. I have one
of these and it works very well for tractors mid
sized tractors like those from the 50's. I think
the last price I saw on one of these was about
$500 for a kit including the hoses.

Up from that is a electric pump. I have one I got
used so really can't help much on the price.
Never set it up, got the hand pump and it has
worked well for my use.

One thing I will offer is the draw point from the
nurse/bulk tank. I know the instructions for the
Krug advised to pull the liquid from the dead
bottom of the tank opposed to using a dip tube.
USE THE DIP TUBE!! LP has a couple products that
will settle out. Usually about the consistency of
gun grease. It stinks to high heaven and creates
all sorts of havoc with the carburation systems.

newfarmer9, Filling an LP Tank is Not Complicated at all.....
IF You want to spend your hard earned money and buy a pump of some kind Go Ahead!
BUT,!!!!!It is not Necessary!
Remember Back in High School/ College Chemistry Class,.....You Studied the Principal a liquid moving from an area of High Concentration to an area of Low Concentration.......?
Filling an LP Tank is the same Thing.
With a Single Nurse Hose from the Bulk tank to the work tank.
High Concentration of volume of liquid, and pressure ---> to ---> Low Concentration of volume of liquid, and pressure.
Bulk Tank "Must" have a liquid line!
Connect your hose to both tanks.
Open Bleed valve on the Work tank (tractor, Pickup, BBQ etc, etc).
If the work tank has a Vapor Return there is a Bleeder valve that can be used to help drop the pressure in the tank too.
When the pressure drops to a given point the pressure in the Nurse tank will push the liquid LP into the Work tank.
When the work tank reaches 85% full, there abouts, liquid will start escaping out... Remove the valve in the Vapor return, Close bleed valve Remove hose from the work tank and go on your way

Wasn't sure about the cost on pumps, for $500 I will definitely just fill by using a nurse tank. Sounds easy enough, sure if I have everything laid out I can figure it out. I do not have a bulk propane tank on site, I guess the easiest way would be to buy a big nurse tank, put it on a trailer, and drive it to the propane supplier once in a while to fill, then fill the tractor from the nurse tank?

I think those LPG nurse tanks are illegal to tow with LPG on the highway in Texas

Nope, then you'd be over the 119 gal min and you'd be transporting a haz mat, requiring placards, shipping papaers, proper labeling, etc. and a CDL with Haz Mat Endorsement.

The best way is to shop around for a company willing to work with you on your specific plan. Ask around for price, etc.
