3010 John Deere gas diesel

Bought these tractors, one diesel with 2226 hrs, other one gas, 3500 hrs on it,The one with the ropes is the gas, thinking about taking the diesel motor and putting it in the nicer gas tractor. your thoughts?

Unless the gas engine is bad or the diesel can't do some main work because of it's single wheel- like a loader job- leave them as is. 2 working tractors with some equipment interchange handy to have compared to one that might stop for a minor annoyance in a critical harvest time. If you mean a straight swap and still have 2 working tractors just some style issue with a practical base- the swapped diesel and wide front get a lots of use loader job schedule- while the now gas narrow front gets a part time garden and mower detail as main job, emergency backup secondary-- then have some fun swapping engines and doing some other needed deferred maintenance- you'll find some little things to fix. Single wheel rig seems to have spent some time outside- maybe on a sickle mower or a veggy cultivator? RN.

The Diesel looks ruff but everything is tight on it.
Going to use the Diesel and sell the gas after changing motors. Sending it to Wis, to work on a 90ac, farm

Why change the engines???? You then have two orphan tractors.

The wide front end and the Roll bar could both be changed in less than a half a day.

The gas tractor is an cobbled up tractor anyway. The fenders are IH fenders and the Roll bar top is cobbled on too. The correct roll bar top would have been steel. The home made battery box and all. I would be more afraid of the gas tractor than the diesel one. The Diesel tractor has been fooled with less. Guys that cobble things usually mess with stuff inside too.

I would switch the front ends and paint the diesel. The roll bar would be a minus as it is not correct. They also are not great on Northern tractors. A fifty degree day on a tractor with a top will make you hunt up a coat. Then after you hit a few more trees there will be more than the muffler bent.

I also wold not trust the roll bar for roll over protection. Something looks off on it. I wonder if it is off a different brand tractor too. It is not tall enought to be the correct one for a JD 3020.

Sell the gas tractor after you switch the front ends and buy the factory roll bar from JD. They have a program that sells them at cost. You then would know you have one that will protect you in a roll over.

yeah - why??? that 3010 gas will run forever if you keep the oil changed and the engine tuned up. Easier to work on, gas is about 50 cents less per gallon right now than diesel.

agree with all of this but I would keep the 3010 gas (it will probably run all right with IH 656 fenders) and put a wide front end on the diesel. Buy the rops from JD for both of them. You have two good working tractors.

If the diesel runs good I would swap some tin.Is the left rear tire on the diesel a recap? If you swap engine's you will find there is more of a difference than just plugs and injectors.

Todd you must never have owned a JD New generation tractor. I am a JD guy and will never own one to use again. They run terrible on the new gas formulations. I fought a JD 3020 gas on the feeder wagon for years and finally just sold it and switched to a diesel.

The GAS one never did run right very long. If you have them lean enough that they will not foul plugs then they will not take throttle. If you rich them up so they will take throttle then they will foul the plugs often. I do mean often. Like one every few weeks. It got to where I kept a spare set in the tractor tool box and a spinner wrench to do quick changes in the middle of chores.

Also gas maybe 50 cents per gallon cheaper but that diesel tractor could very well use half the fuel that a JD 3010 gas would use if pulled at all. Had family with JD gas tractors. When we used to plow they would have to fill at lunch and supper. The diesel maybe at supper. I have seen a JD 3010 use fifty gallons of gas a day plowing.

If you want a gas tractor of that age buy a Oliver, IH, Ford but not a JD.

I have owned gas 3020 for many years.. Runs perfect.. however it does have a allis chalmers carb on her.. J.D. mechanic told me exactly what you said.. hard to adjust and keep adjusted so someone figured that the allis carb would bolt on and very simple.. runs great..

no we had IH gassers in the 60s and 70s <GRIN> Family friends and neighbors have a gas 3020 bought new in 1967 that is still in service (as far as I know)I was under the impression green ran the best no matter what model - BAHAHAHA

mss 3020....could you please tell me which allis carb you are running on the 3020 to be trouble free?....thnx......steve

I will try to get the number off it.. I believe the mechanic told me D17.. not sure.. will check..
