m starter spinning backwards

Just put a new starter in the m and when I hit the switch all it would do is whurrr. Pulled it out and tested it and looked to be spinning backwards. Tested the old one and sure enough.... is there anything I can do? The old one has broken teeth. It's been so long since I ordered it I can't' remember where it came from. Sending it back will be difficult.

The polarity of the field (or the brushes) must be changed. It may have been made wrong. or is from a Power unit with the starter in the front of the ring gear. Jim

Marine engines may turn opposite.Old 2 cycle could be started clockwise or counter clockwise.Farm All starters were behind the flywheel.

An Oliver starter looks identical to that one and turns the other way. It'll bolt right on. I know that from experience. The one you have might have been labeled or packaged wrong. If the drive is kicking in and turning the engine backwards, reversing the direction of the starter motor itself won't do you a lick of good. The drive will still want to kick in in the wrong direction.

Since the engine did not spin backwards most likely the drive is correct for you old starter. Just put the new drive in your old starter. The brushes most likely will fit too. If you can't send it back just use the new one for parts for the old one.

Unlike a PM DC motor, simply reversing the polarity to the starter stud and frame ground WILL NOT change its direction, you have to do like Professor Jim noted, reverse EITHER the Field or Armature Polarity but NOT both. Still the starter drive has to also be configured for a certain direction and Im not sure from here what all that may require??

You have the wrong one and changing the drive wont help as the armature has left hand threads. You need another starter
