Briggs Starter

I have an older mower with a 12 HP Briggs and Stratton engine. The electric starter turns the engine, but kicks out just as it"s about to start. Any ideas?

It very well could be the ignition switch itself or the solenoid. I"m leaning towards the switch. You could put a test light on it and find out for sure.

On most starters when it does that, its the bendix that is weak. There are two different gears, one fiber, one brass, replace it with the same one.

I knew a man if you called a starter drive a bendix he wood lecture you to no ends about it.
When he got done with his lecture one didn't call a starter drive a "bendix" anymore.

I use to sell B&S parts. I sold a lot of starters when the real problem was gummed up carbureators from ethynol. Sounds strange I know, but believe me. Float valve leaks, fuel runs down cylinder into crankcase, overfills crankcase and restricts piston.Check your oil level.

I've seen leaky carbs fill the crank more than once. They were all briggs too. I Couldn't get the carb to stop leaking, so I installed a solenoid valve. My backhoe came with one.

If he has over head valves, could the cause for the starter going South, be the exhaust valve going out of spec?

I had a similar sized B&S and the starter quit. I took it off and found that it was really clogged with dust and dirt and turned hard. I used a can of spray carburetor cleaner to get the starter clean and then put some light oil on the bearings at both ends of the shaft. When I put it back on the lawn tractor the starter worked like new. I used that tractor a couple more years, until the engine and the mower deck were completely worn out. Good luck!
