Johnson grass

I have some Johnson grass . I been hitting it with after market roundup. It keeps comming back what do I need to knock this stuff out. Thanks. Donald.

Since it spreads rhizomes its to be hard to killout with generic chemicals. I never tried to kill with chemicals either made hay or grazed hard and where possible turned hogs on it.

I"ve pretty much controlled it with generic Roundup, IF you mix it strong enough; 2% solution.

It is very hard to kill because not only does it spread by rhizomes it also spreads by germinating seeds.
You could be spraying and killing the plant only to have more seeds germinating.

There are a few chemicals that will kill it but most need a sprayers license to buy them because of the many different hold back dates. Can not graze or cut for hay; can not use on food crops; ect.... and you gave us no clue of where the problem is.

Lawns usually do not have a problem with Johnson grass because if you cut it and cut it often the other grasses will choke it out.
If it is a pasture graze it hard and cut it before it goes to seed.
In 10 years you may get the upper hand on it.

You should be able to kill with after market Roundup (glysophate). There is some Johnson grass that is now resistant to Roundup. If you been spraying a Johnson grass plant and that particular plant appears to die off but come back then it is resistant. You will than have to use other chemicals. I have glysophate or Round up resistant marestale and waterhemp and so I now have to use Liberty. Unfortunatly Roundup was so overused & misused that its weed killing ability is now greatly diminished.

Roundup, generic or otherwise, will kill it but it established stands WILL take repeated applications over several years.

if you have time cut the seed head then cut it down let it grow back and cut it before it gets a seed head or if you have extra money a few cattle guys around here use maverick

Donaldinky, Deep plow it. String up an low 2 strand Electric Fence, Turn in 20 to 30 big Hogs in and watch them root out the Roots! in a short while depending on the size of the field!
What come s back you will need to Spray or Rope-wick with Round up! If that stand is a well established one it WILL take a while to kill it completely!

Would something like ground clear work. It a 7 acre pasture that I won't be using for a few month. Calves r too young to be on it like to keep an eye on them .

I use Dupont Pastora in my bermuda grass and it works very well. It will kill Johnson grass and crab grass but you need to read the label to make sure that it's safe for what you are wanting to keep. Broadcast rate is about 1 1/2 oz per acre and costs about $15 an acre. I killed out most of the Johnson grass using it and now just spot spray as needed.

It's taking over my hay patch and that's ok as my cows love it. Glad it spreads like it does. Cheaper than the high priced seed that I otherwise would be buying.

Around here in N. TX. repeated mowing, keeping it short, will reduce it significantly if not kill it.

The problem with trying to get rid of it in a crop is that what you do to get rid of it disturbs/interferes with the crop.

Worst thing you can do is to plow it as you loosen the soil, break up the rhizomes and they just make that many more plants....like cutting Coastal Bermuda runners. The harder you try to kill it the better it likes it.

Others have told yopu what it is and how difficult it is to kill.
My experience is that if you have a crop in the field you have to use the maximium allowed round-up, probalby around 40 oz per ac, and expect the crop to be damaged some. If you do not have a crop use an even heavier dose.

We had Johnson grass on a farm I use to rent real bad. We were planting non-GMO beans and started using Tornado over the top. First year we had less than half as much as the year before and the fall of the second year the fields were clean. We continued using it and found an added bonus in the multi-a-flora rose bushes around started dieing off around the fields and we never had a Johnson grass problem again. I don't know if they make Tornado any more but I am sure they make something to replace it, Someone out there will know what did. Ask a chemical rep and see what they say to use in your area, Never hurts to ask. Bandit
