Tractor starting issues...

My Massey 202 (135) has been a little slow start lately. Does not crank fast like it usually does. New battery last fall. Could the generator be bad? I understand some will replace the generator with an alternator. Why do this? Is this difficult? It is not near home; can I jump start it with my atv if it does not start next time?

6 or 12 volts?? Need info to help you help your self. Reason many go to an alternator is less hassle keeping the charging system work due to less things to go wrong etc. As for jumping it well yes no or maybe if it is 6 volts and the ATV is 12 you could blow the battery up in your face

Could be a starter problem. One of my diesels was starting hard and boosting with the boost pack did not help. I pulled the starter and found bronze powder at the end. I got the starter rebuilt and it cranked way faster and fired right up.

Does it crank faster when you boost it? If not,
could be a starter issue. I'm guessing it's 12
volt. Nothing wrong with a generator if it's
working properly. Poor battery cables and/or
connections can cause slow cranking too.
Alternators will charge at a lower RPM and may put
out more amps but I've never had a problem with
the generator on my 135 diesel other than needing
a new bearing. It's also possible your new battery
is faulty. They should be able to test it where
you bought it and replace it on warranty if it's
bad.

You can apply 12 volts directly to the starter of most Fords. The solenoid keeps 12 volts out of the 6 volt system.

Reading the ammeter and testing the battery with a hydrometer will give you the answer. Are you letting the tractor sit idle for many months?

Check the cables, especially the ground cable AT BOTH ENDS. If the ground cable just attaches to the frame of the tractor, you might want to add and auxiliary ground to one of the starter mounting bolts.

I'm betting you don't run it enough for gen to keep battery up....charge battery and see what happens and then you might see why people use an alternator
