John deere 4020 overhaul

I am looking at buying a 1969 john deere 4020, side counsel hydraulics brand new rear firestones, m&w turbo kit on it, clean tractor but it needs an overhaul very soon. How much would it cost to have a complete overhaul done on this motor? He is asking 9000?

Jacarlson290, Also while the engine is torn down Budget $3000 to have the top pulled of the tranny and inspect it, R&R worn or broken issues, to make sure you have everything up to snuff. Even if every thing is OK there is still 43 yrs of wear and in there! A fresh engine O.H. with Turbo will show you where the weakest link is!!
Hope this helps.

John A.

Overhaul kit with bearings will run $12-$1500... figure $600-$900 to redo the head(flat surface, redo valves and seats with proper standout, may take a set of exhaust valves)front and rear seals $100.oil,filters,fuel filters coolant figure $125. While the engine is out, at least inspect the clutch, replace the input shaft seals, pto apply seals. Have the injectors checked,or exchange them for a set of remans. Probably all told with labor,if the clutch is good you will do a good job of burning through $6500 if you farm all the work out. Could be done cheaper if you opt for an inframe.

I agree with the 6-10k. It depends on how deep you get. The last 2 I did for customers both needed new radiators and clutches along with complete out of frame overhaul. Both were around 10k when done.

Things to add:

The valve seats and valves are probably worn and will need replaced to bring them back to the correct height.

The gear on the camshaft that turns the oil and diesel pump is probably shot.

You will need the tool to install the front and rear seals. Make sure your Deere dealer will loan them to you.

Keep enough cash to go through the diesel pump and injectors.

The rocker arms will probably need resurfacing.

Well without any labor the parts alone could easily be $4500-7500. Depends on how long the turbo has been on it. Also depends on your definition of "overhaul". If it is just a sleeve/piston set and bearings then it will be cheaper but it would be like showering and putting your dirty under-ware back on. The cylinder head and valves will need work. The injections pump and injectors should be done too. Then how is the transmission???

Personally I would never buy a JD 4020 that has had a turbo on it. The rest of the tractor is usually shot. The transmission was designed for 90-100 HP. You stick a turbo and turn the pump up to 125-150 HP and everything down stream is worn out way faster.

I have a 1972 JD 4020 I completely tore down to the housings and started back out with new parts on all worn items. I have double in parts alone compared to what he is asking for his. I also have a "new" 100 HP tractor for less than a 1/3 of the money.

So not to be smart about it it all depends on what you want to do.

I know some people love 4020's but $9000 and it needs a major overhaul? That sounds real high to me. Depending if you do the engine yourself or have a shop do all the work, it could easily cost over $10,000 by the time you're done. Then you need to look at the rest of the tractor.

Yo had better be buying them. Any side console with good tires and paint around here starts at $15 and go up. I have seen original paint, average tires, late style JD 4020 break $20 K in the last year. Truly rebuilt ones can hit 30 K.

Guys have found out that the new computer stuff is a headache for chore tractors. Dust, moisture, mud, manure and the new stuff quits working.
