I bought a new rear rim and trying to remove factory paint. Paint remover did not touch it. Sand blasting is very slow.I tried lacquer thinner, did not have any acetone.Anything else besides sanding? thanks joe

Can't offer much help Joe, but if its powder coat, heat may help.
Big electric heat gun and a scraper.
Still would have to sand it smooth, which may even be harder.
I'm wondering though, if its factory tough paint, why remove it?
Why not just remove the sheen and paint over it?
It would make great primer!

Put it out in the weather - it'll start to peel in a few weeks! I have not been impressed with anything I have gotten with powder coating.

I would scotch bright the finish and paint over it if it were me. But if you feel you need to remove it we put our racks and painted items in an oven and burn it off at work where we powder coat. Since you might not have an oven big enough and i would not do this in the wifes oven. You can remove the paint with a tourch by burning it down to the metal.

Rough it up with some scotch pad & paint over it. If not get out the torch & burn it off but you better know what you are doing when you reprime it & repaint it. Because if not you will not be happy with the end result.

I believe I would try to remove the paint. The powdercoat paint was melted onto the rims between 300 and 400 degrees. I bet you could melt the paint with a heat gun and wipe if off with rags. Just be careful not to get it on yourself. It will stink so I would do it outdoors.

Like Rabbit says, make sure it has some scratches here and there then leave it out in the shade where it will be wet for a good part of each day and the coating will fall off in a couple weeks.

Thanks for the replys. I tryed heat, propane torch, and scraper, not much effect.I have the larger areas sanded down and I am going to try electrolis(?) today.
Re why my friend painted over one and had to strip it down and repaint. Also I hate powercoat, my trailor rims are powercoated and LOOK tearable. Where the lug nuts broke the seal, the finnish just rusts under the paint and chips off.

I hate powder coat also.

My sandblast person has a booming business blasting powder coat off trailer chassis, then repainting with good primer and paint.

The powder coat does not bind to the metal, it just coats it, so a chip will get rust under it and then it will start to flake off.
