I posted this on jd site also 4020 starter has power to solenoid with just battery cable hooked to side of starter no wires hooked to solenoid but all post show hot

24 Volt starter will have electricity on the "S" terminal back feed from the post on the side of starter by way of the pull in windings in the solenoid. See wiring schematic.

ok thanks tractor wont start off button power checked ok gauges work jumped across solenoid with screw driver it started buy starter stayed engaged took starter to a shop they said it was ok

tx jim on the solenoid it has a yellow to s 2 blues to center post and 2 browns to far left on solenoid is this correct

These two 4010 schematic diagrams posted on the DEERE board by long-time poster "qwece" are REAL close to how the 4020 is wired and MAY give you a little more insight into how the batteries are connected and how 24 Volts gets to the starter solenoid.

ONE difference MAY be that you have a pushbutton for "start", and the diagrams show a key switch with a "start" position.

The little terminal on the solenoid nearest the engine block is @ (+)12 Volts with respect to the chassis, as it connects to the lead at the side of the starter from the (+) post of the RH battery.

The other little solenoid terminal gets connected to the (-)12 Volts with respect to the chassis in a round about way... (-)12 Volts leaves the large upper stud on the solenoid though the blue wire, flows through the large circuit breaker at the starter (if so equipped), though a circuit breaker on the panel, then to "BATT A" on the key switch.

Then out of the key switch as a black wire to starter pushbutton, then out of starter pushbutton as a yellow wire to the neutral safety switch(es) and on to the previously-mentioned other little terminal on the starter solenoid, still as a yellow wire.

(WHEW!!! I HOPE I got that reasonably correct!

Did you look at the wiring schematic with the "colors of the wires"(blue, brown & yellow) listed????? Did you check neutral start switch for continuity? Check each batteries voltage?
