O/T I Know They are Just Weeds, but...

One part of my food plot has several milkweeds. Since butterflies and bees are wildlife too, I let them grow. You have to admit they are not only unique but gorgeous as well.

spraying and roadside mowing is adding stress to the Monarch population. I try to let them grow.

You should have picked the budded heads before they blosemed. Treat the heads just like broccoli. boil the heads and apply butter, salt, and pepper. Ours are just getting ready, and hope to pick enough to freeze some meals up tomarrow.
google cooking milkweed. There are 3 stages that you can harvest and eat it.

They may be pretty and maybe you don't care if they take over your food plot, but is there anybody down wind who is trying to grow good feed? Don't let them go to seed, they spread like wild fire and ruin good hay.

ACG, We ate them regularly when I was a kid and, like all vegetables, I loved them.
I try, to this day, to get at least one batch every year.
I may just go looking for some tomorrow!
You are right about the bud "heads" being the best but you do have to get them early.
I have so much milkweed that when I harvest the leaves, I cut only the very top of the plant with the smallest(and tenderest)leaves.
In my mind, I've always considered milkweed somewhere between asparagus and spinach, two of my favorites vegetables.
