14 year old son of a neighbor informed me that the term "haying season" should be changed to "breakdown season". Breakdown Season. How accurate!

Yes, just sitting in the barn, at rest, eqmt rarely breaks.

sometimes rats will eat the wiring.

It's like harvest. You can work in the fall and make sure the combine is ready to go for the next year - greased and everything. Come next year when you pull it out there are three bearings that are out and two belts the you are sure will only make it one day. One of those bearings will take at least a day in the hot sun as the straw walkers will have to come out or something.

Breakdown season indeed.

Or worse. It's been awhile, but one fond memory of haying season was a kid that I went to high school with was out swathing and he got the tractor-pulled machine plugged up. He gets off the tractor and uses his enormously large knife to unplug the machine by cutting up the hay. Sure enough, he loses his knife and spends a half hour looking for it. He finally gives up looking for his knife and gets on the tractor to continue swathing. Only then he finds his knife....when he backs the tractor up, the rear wheel gets sliced by the knife (conveniently laying on the ground) and ruins the tire. His dad wasn't all that happy.
