Her story made the front page of the EVENTING NATION.COM.
For those who don't know, she is a certified farrier and works as an apprentice with a fella 2 days a week, then the rest of the week on Her own clients horses. A long time pony club gal and the fact that she was raised and around horses (here with me) all her life makes her knowledge of the animals health acute. (I have to brag a tad, but she's very good!)

Better lock that girl up for a few more years before

Congratulations on her success! :)

Don't know if ya noticed, but the reflection image in the video is from the right rear fender of my 2006 Dodge 1 ton! (My total claim to fame)

That's a fine story! Wow.....a young girl that "wants" to work, has a head on her shoulders and looks good too. That doesn't happen too often. You have a right to be proud Larry.

I am always glad to see some younger person learning a skilled trade. It would appear that she is learning the "Correct" way to shoe a horse. She should be able to establish a good business in the area she is in. I think, long term, being a female will help her grow her business. More women owning horses than men.

Two things to pass along to her:

1) Tell her to be real careful around other people's horses. They may not be as well trained as her horses are. Zero dogs around any horses she is working with. One bark at the wrong time and she is injured.

2) Tell her CASH payment on any and all farrier work!!!! I know several people that do this for a living. It seems that the pleasure horse circuit is loaded with DIME store millionaires.

One fellow that worked all day at a smaller stable got a bad check he never got covered. He took it to court but secretary was just an employee so not criminally liable. He did get a judgment but he is at the back of the line behind a bunch of other people in front of him.

STILL darn good young person!!! Wish her the best!!!

Larry,
Your granddaughter is amazing young woman.

Wish I had been as independent as her, back when I was 20.

Good for her! I love seeing young folks that are "taking hold" and making something of themselves, and not just making a career out of texting with their friends and posting to Facebook.

We had used an older guy for years for shoeing, because he is very good at shoeing "gaited" horses (you have to have just the right angle on the hoof, and several other tricks, or a Paso Fino or Walker won't gait properly). But he just upped his price (again), and added a $20 "trip charge", so wifey had had enough. She had heard about a girl (19, I think) who could could shoe Pasos, so tried her- $10 less per horse, no trip charge- and she is fast, pleasant, and eager for the work. And the one Paso who usually has to be urged to gait, did better on her shoeing than on the other guys. So we have a new farrier!

Good deal. I'm all for any young person that wants to learn a trade or occupation the will result in a job that will support them. Degrees in basket weaving, abstract art, etc.--not so much. If you want an education in a subject that won't result in a job, go ahead--but don't ask me to support it. It's all about the end result to me.
