Gehl 1710 Round baler--- Good or Bad?

Have a brother looking for a cheaper old big round baler. Found one of these, looks okay and priced right. Are they a good one for limited use per year? We sure don't want a money pit!

I've always had Gehl balers, there were a lot of'em around here but hardly any of those roller type were ever sold here. Dealers just never ordered them in for some reason. Somebody on here was telling one time that there's a double sprocket on them that likes to loosen up and ruin a shaft or some such thing. I'd kinda think you might be able to find a more reputable belt type baler around somewhere. The older ones sell for a song anymore.

Basically a Claus designed drum baler. They will make a soft core bale. If you know how to run one they will make a good bale. They pull hard when finishing the bale. You had better have a 90 HP minimum on a large one.

For a guy that only bales a little each year I would take one of them any day over an old close throat belt baler. That includes all the JD balers up to the 530 and Vermeer to the F series.

Thanks for the advice. May be using a JD 4520 so we need to see if it is set up for 1000 PTO.

It will be mainly for grass hay from a former CRP patch and ditches and pasture type areas.

Been many years since the small square baler left the farm. That machine would keep a crew in shape!
